I have a 2001 KLR & I want to change the front & rear wheel bearings.
Do I use a lubricant such as soapy water or WD40 before pushing them
into the hub?
2- what is safety wire used for? I saw it posted (I think)on Fred's site.
3- what is a prevailing torque nut? (from what I understand you don't
need a torque wrench to tighten it up). How does it work?
Thank you from a balmy -25C (windchill) Moncton, NB

put the bearings in the freezer for a coupls hours before installing them. saftey wire is to keep bolts from loosening usually you drill a hole in the bolt below the nut put the wire in so you dont lose the nut? blue locktite or similiar, works fine. the torque nut does not need the lock type washer that is on there now ."faster to change"?

Hey Ernie, I hit your link--nice pictures and farkized bike--but I think you have to much time on your hands. That bike looks like it is for sale! Way to clean! You guys should follow his link and see his bike. It is a beauty. Those tires must be a bear on pavement but great on a gravel/dirt road! Got 2 questions for you. 1) What are the OD size of the sewer pipes you used for tool-tubes? 2) Where did you place the rear 12v socket? I looked for it but could not find it. 3) OK so I can't count...Do you ever hit the tool tubes with the front tire? revmaaatin.> Ernie Campbell > http://www.oldskoolklr650.com >

"That bike looks like it is for sale! Way to clean!"
Check out the odometer, only 78.5 miles. Not even a full tank of gas!
That works out to 1 FPM (farkle per mile).
Nice looking bike though.
