crossbreeding in progress.
Hi Jeff,
It is hard to guess from a distance. No, I took out
the doo to grind it down, I do have some common sense,
what s lacking is experience. I am pretty sure all
the washers are in, the two small gears kept sliding,
because the bike was leaning to the left side a little
bit. I duly noticed the washers and bearings, and the
big gear did spin, so if it is something, it must be
something very minor, causing havoc. I am pretty sure
the starter motor is burnt, but I haven t checked yet,
according to people who know it must be, see list. I
will try to get a friend mechanic take a look, and
help to put it all back together one more time. I was
told that a Suzuki model start motor fits this Thing,
Kawasaki probably will cost at least double. I went
for a good swim this morning, and I used my toy bike,
the Yamaha YBR125, surprise, it was wonderful! On the
highway it does not go over 100 km with more than 8000
revs., but on the bad roads, with potholes a million,
mud, stones, gravel, it did perfectly. Except the
suspension of cause. I even crossed the river, max.
depth one foot abt., and went up the embankment on the
other side, something I would not dare to do with the
KLR650, because topheavy heavy heavy, and the seat
height. So, my conclusion is that for really bad
terrain, something light and low takes you virtually
everywhere, and if not, you put the bike on your
shoulder, and carry it. And less weight, less need
for power. The Yamaha makes one model, the TW200,
with a rear wheel of 14, tire size 180/60, foreward
130/80-18. Intriguing isn t it? No good on the
highway of cause, but great in the off-road stuff, and
that s important to me. The KLR can handle most dirt
roads, but is really the best on the asphalt.
So I plan to crossbreed my KLR with the YBR, to see
which one of the offspring would make the ideal bike
for me. If that doesn t work, I will probably try to
sell it, and get something more simple and suitable to
my needs. It may sound strange to American ears, but
less can be more. Not always it has to be bigger and
stronger and fancier. I tend to be a minimalist,
eliminated underwear and socks too. And I like a
kickstarter on my bikes.
I will keep you posted on progress, if any, I am not
so keen on taking it apart again for the moment, I
have this feeling: F...amily it!
Thanks again for the diagnosis, and on the list,
everybody learns something, especially on how not to.
At least we have fun writing endless bitchbriefs. Jake.

2007 klr/ural sidecar rig for sale.
I hadn't ridden a bike in about 30 years. I didn't realize that I
wanted a heavier bike than a KLR. Next rig will possibly be a trike,
but I need to move the sidecar rig first.
