Hi, I am a new member, I am looking at buying a 1985 KLR 600. I want to
know if a later model KLR 650 motor will fit in the frame, without
modification. Also, Are there any other significant differences between
the 600 and the 650?

1985 klr 600 - comparison with klr 650
Top Post:
Well, off the top of my head, some differences are:
'84 KLR600, kick start only.
'85 KLR600 - '86 KLR600 has kick start and electric.
Much smaller gas tank than the KLR650.
KLR600 has rear drum brake rather than 650 disc.
Front disc brake rotor on KLR600 is attached to hub
with bolts and nuts, where the 650's hub holes are threaded,
uses only the bolts. Otherwise hub, wheel are the same.
Slots cut in face of rotor are different 600 vs 650,
same size rotor,though.
Exhaust & Carbs are basically the same.
Gauges, bodywork, seat, frame, CDI box, rear wheel,
tank, controls, swing arm are different
Not sure if the engines can be swapped around easily.
The bottom end of the 600 was the basis for the 650,
but has different gearing, clutch differences.
KLR600 has more in common with the same year
KLR250's, than the '87 up, KLR650's.
250 & 600 use same wheels, gauges, rear suspension,
not sure about frame, front end. Tank, bodywork, seat
are just a bit different, just enough that they are not easily
interchangeable.
I have an '84 KLR600 partzer, "85 & '86 KLR600 runners.
Also have a '86 KLR250, along with a '90 KLR650 Tengai.
Several KLR 650's, 2 '88 partzers, my main ride, a '95 KLR650,
(the Ken & Barbie paint scheme), a '97 KLR650 partzer.
A '97 KLR 650 dark Teal Blue runner, and a '93 KLX 650C runner.
Sold my '2002 KLR650 earlier this year.
Trying to resist the urge to get an '08 KLR650....
