rear brakes...

Post by Andy T » Sat Aug 12, 2006 9:42 am

So it ISN'T Red ligh stop, green light go, yellow go faster? I was also informed by another KLRista that there is some kind of spring washer that is missing... Gonna look into that as well. -Andy 1995 KLR650 "Barbie" 2000 Suzuki Intruder VS800 "Wifey's Bike" Don S wrote: Try reducing the amount of times you use the brakes. Use engine compression and down shifting to assist in braking. Also, as I explained to my wife, when approaching traffic lights, you will without fail, absolutely every time, have a red light after the yellow light. Once she recognized and understood that infallible sequence, she started slowing down when she saw the yellow. Her brake replacements went from once a year to every five years. Thus i am asking here: 1)Why am I going through rear brakes? I just replaced them in March and put 7000 - 8000 miles on (as well as 3 rear tires) 2)Why is the inboard pad wearing faster? That is why I am replacing them this time and why I replaced them before... I clean (with emry cloth) and lube the rods that the brake rides on... I make sure it is moving smoothly too. What gives? -Andy 1995 KLR650 "Barbie" 2000 Suzuki Intruder VS800 "Wifey's Bike" PS I have been searching for a better carb for the KLR and when I find it I will let you know. I think Holly will be my best bet... --------------------------------- Want to be your own boss? Learn how on Yahoo! Small Business. valves clearance

Post by Yan » Sat Aug 12, 2006 10:59 am

I just checked the valves on my 2006 KLR with 2400 km (1500 miles). Here are the numbers: Left Intake between 0.15 and 0.18 mm (seems OK) Right Intake between 0.18 and 0.2 mm (seems OK) Left Exaust between 0.23 and 0.25 mm (borderline loose) Rigth Exaust between 0.18 and 0.20 mm (almost borderline tight) I am not confident in my mechanical skills to replace valve shims myself so I would need to take the bike to the dealer which is PITA and costly. Do you think I need to do it now because the exaust valves don't seem to be in the middle of the range or I can wait a few thousand kilometers more? And if you think I can wait then when would be a good time to check the clearance again? Thanks.
