gell seats
does anyone have any experience with gel seats ?
are there significant differences between brands? though i have not seen a brand yet just different companies that sell a gel seat
$109 to &129
are the prices I've seen so far with my limited research
also does the corbin weigh more than the stock seat. on my concourse the corbin weighed a lot more than the stock. not a big deal on that pig but something to consider on my klr.
thanks for all input

Hal - I rigged a wooden bead seat made from the kind cab drivers use. I got it at a garage sale and it works great on an old farts butt like mine. Cost = 25cents

I had a gel pad that I used on my seat some. Didn't care for it.
Sheep skin is a better add on to me. I am running a beaded seat now.
Thinking about going back to sheep skin. No jokes for all you sickos
out there.

I've heard they are worth it. You can buy gel from an upholsterer, remove
the KLR seat, remove an inch or so of the foam padding and replace it with
gel, so I"ve read. I'm considering it. Even at that it will cost more than a
few dollars. The stuff is pretty pricy but it feels so cool!

I've owned an upholstery shop for over 20 years. I started installing the gel for people when it first came out ( more than twelve years ago I think). At any rate, the gel rarely made any improvement unless you are riding an old vibrating ridgid frame bike. What I've had the most luck with is Hi-density memory foam, It will adjust to your pressure points and weight to distribute your weight evenly. Corbin claims to have memory foam in some of their new seats, however, I've taken a few of them apart to adjust or recover them and all I've found is their standard pour-moulded foam. Just my opinion but I wouldn't waste my money. Also, the people I've talked to about the gel seats say it makes their butt sweat more?

Wow. A real expert! Cool.
So, would you advise one to replace some amt. of the top of the stock
foam with memory foam, as opposed to installing a new Corbin? I'm close
to Corbin-izing, but not 100% sold. Have had good results with their
seats on road bikes,
What about seat shape? Some of the aftermarket seats look as though they
might tend to be a little narrower and differently sculpted in the front.

Can't speak for the aftermarket gel covers, but I had the factory gel
seat on my DR-Z400S and that sucker really soaked up the sun and fed
it back to my bum. Not sweat so much as a potential for blisters! Way
too hot if you parked it for half an hour in the sun, and less
comfortable overall than the stock plank. Finally had the stocker
attended to by Sargent Cycle Products.

Thats great information. I'll consider the memory foam. I certainly don't
want a sweaty butt.

Hey Doug, When I build a seat with memory foam, since I'm in there anyway, I
custom fit the foam to the rider. So, usually, on a "KLR" type bike the mods
to the original foam seem to be shaving it to the height the rider needs and
sometimes narrowing the foam depending on your anatomy. Once I know what the
new shape is, then I take out an inch of the foam and replace it with the
memory foam. The other nice thing about the memory foam is, since it is a
hi-density but it molds to fit you, I can make the seat much lower than with
stock foam and you won't bottom out on long rides. I have some serious
testimonials with some guys doing 14-16 hour days after the mods, however,
those have been on heavy road bikes. Any other questions, I'll be happy to
help. Dennis

I just got back from the 3,500 mile Labrador Loop and threw a $10 sheepskin I picked up from Ikea before I went over the seat. It was fantastic compared to the stock saddle and I'm seriously considering fitting one full time.
Has anyone tried the sweet cheeks from http://www.cycle-analyst.com/ ? I met a guy on a KTM while I was away and he loved it, especially as you could flip it out of the way for off road excursions.
Regards
Andy
