frustrating shim calculations

Post by Robert Wayne » Mon Jun 19, 2006 2:41 pm

Would someone that is generous, helpful and has the time, look at my shim measurements and advise me on the correct size shims to use! Exhaust: left side, clearance .006 with a 245 shim. right side, clearance .007 with a 250 shim. Intake: left side, clearance .005 with a 260 shim. right side, clearance .004 with a 260 shim. This is the second time I have checked the clearance. My A18 has 6000 miles. I checked it at 3000 and the values were almost the same. I want to increase the clearance .002 on every valve. Thanks a lot for the kind soul that helps me! And on a positive note: Thanks to Mark, before I got into the engine, I did the rear swing arm lube. His pictures looked like my parts. Everything came apart easy but had I waited, it might have been a different story. All the needle bearing were lubed fine, one good thing. robert --------------------------------- Sneak preview the all-new Yahoo.com. It's not radically different. Just radically better. Not what you asked for, but to take them to max clearance for each, I get: L Ex. 2.35 R Ex. 2.45 L In. 2.50 R In. 2.50 That is just using shimcalc from IronJungle. No math was used in the formulation of this answer. -- Doug Herr doug@...

one aux light or two - electrical capacity?

Post by chrishan gunasekara » Mon Jun 19, 2006 3:53 pm

I am running two 55W lights right now with a dirrect connection from the battery. no problem, the battery handles it fine, even with the head beam on. I have the stock 55/65 W H-4 light bulb. I mounted mine right beside the head light, on the two screws that hold the head light housing. If interested write to me and I'll send you some pics. Jeff Layton wrote: I found a set of small PIAA 1400 Series knock-off fog lights for $39 at Harborfreight. They're 55W each. I was thinking of mounting them under my headlight, or maybe to the fork clamps so they turn with the forks. But I'm wondering if two 55w lights would be too much for the bike. I do plan to get the stator upgrade from Fred before my big trip, but I'm not sure how much power is "left over" with the other bike stuff running. **Will two 55W lights overwhelm the upgraded aftermarket Stator? **Also, what are the opinions on the light mounting - to the fairing, straight with the headlight, or on the forks, to turn with the handlebars? I found another single light that would work right under the headlamp & provide good light output - the PIAA 1501 - but I haven't found a cheap knockoff yet. OH, and BTW, I have a 55w/100W H4 lamp awaiting install in the factory location with the new socket from Fred. I'll have a GPS, which doesn't draw much, and *maybe* an electric vest and/or gloves, but I would be happy to not have everything on at once (say, trade the light for warmth :-) Thanks to everyone!
