shim question
Just got back from my 500 mile check of my 06. Dealer didn't want
check my valves today. Wanted me to come in again,[with anoter C-
note!].So it looks like I'll be doing it myself. I am wondering what
I should Buy for shims . Do I need the whole set, or is there a common
range I can get by with.
Thanks for all the help I have recieved from the group,
and if your ever headed to Maine hollar!! Don

If you can stand the bike tore down, you can open it up take measurements and then see what shims are in there, and figure out which ones you need and order them, when they come in install them. Otherwise call you local dealer to see if they stock them and how much they are ($12 by me plus need to be ordered) or Order a shim kit if you have the money and do not wish the bike tore down waiting for parts. I actually reused one of mine in another bucket to adjust that valve. Dooden A15 Green Ape> > Just got back from my 500 mile check of my 06. Dealer didn't want > check my valves today. Open bike up, figure out what shims you need, call Fred at Arrowhead
Motorsports, you will have them in 2-3 days. Shims like $4 each

Or whereever you are, order Fred's shim kit and then you'll be the
local hero when it comes to valve shims plus when you do the valves
the second time you will have the shims you need. I speak from
experience, I have a 05 and a 06 .

shim question
I am doing my first valve shim on a new 06. I would not have tried it
if I hadn't found this group. Thanks to all who so willingly share
their knowledge. Shim job is going fine . I had forgotten how much I
love to work on Bikes! My question is,should I set them at there
widest opening or a little less? It is the first time they have been
shimmed. If I go the way i'm started My settings will be as follows
Left intake-.007
Right intake-.008
Left Ex.-.009
Right Ex.-.009
Thanx Don..

klr 650 vs honda xr 650 l
The XR-650 is a very good bike, but.... it depends on what you want to
do with them.
On road trips, your typical XR-650 rider is going to have to stop and
take breaks at least as often as they have to stop to fill up with gas.
Given equal riders, they'll probably be more tired than a KLR rider at
the end of the day.
Take both off road, and the XR is gonna stomp the KLR, again given
riders of equal ability. The XR-650R will stomp the L (but it's not
street legal from the factory).
I'll keep my KLR. I have 10 bikes and still would still choose the KLR
over the XR. In the deep, dense eastern woodlands, my old KDX-200 will
outrun an XR-650.
As an alternative to the more dirt worthy Dual Sport, I'd be more
inclined to take something like the Yamaha WR-450, Honda XR-650 R, or
several other choices, and make it street legal. What the DS world needs
is a lightweight bike with a low first gear and top (preferably 6th)
gear for 60-70 mph running without screaming the engine. Then all you
have to decide is the tires for the type of riding you want to do.
