Opinions ... that is, and I need yours I am planning a ride from Atlanta to Deadhorse, AK and back this summer. To do this I just bought a 2006 KLR and need some assiatance in making the right upgrades. Surfing the web for options is overwhelming, there is so much 3rd party gear available. So I thought I put it to the experts. What would you consider to be the essential modifications that must be made to get a KLR to Alaska and back? tga [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Make a bigger rack and add a trunk, bigger windshield (NOT necessarily higher stocker), protector for the right-side side panel so exhaust heat doesn't melt it, soft bags, tank bag, waterproof duffel for your tent and sleeping bag - then GO! I went to AK on my Bandit in '04 with those mods and they're now done to my KLR. Ed ...Oh yah - a better engine skid plate - don't leave home without it!!!

I going to take off around June 1st from South Texas on the same trip. Maybe I will run into you along the way. I would do the dohickey. You need some tires that will go 10,000 miles. I am using the Pirelli MT 90 ST. My last rear went 15,000 miles. I have done lots of miles with stock windscreen and seat so no changes there. I think the stock bash plate is adequate for the Dalton Highway. I am using 15/38 gearing for better highway cruise but you might want to consider 16/43 because your bike is new and you don't need chain or sprockets. I have a IMS tank that gives a little radiator protection and just enough range to make it up the Dalton without carrying additional gas. I have a Throttlemeister throttle lock/barend that helps to relieve fatigue on long trips and cuts down bar vibration. I have a custom gearbox/tailpack that bolts to the stock rack that is 15x13x13 made out of sheet aluminum that carries my gear with tent and sleeping bag/pad bungied to the outside. I am going to mail spare clothes and supplies to Fairbanks. Plan on stopping at Ft Nelson to do oil/filter change and other maintenance on the way up and on the way back. tomcate39 wrote: Opinions ... that is, and I need yours I am planning a ride from Atlanta to Deadhorse, AK and back this summer. 1)get the name of a concierge at the hotel 2)get the hotel's address 3)ship the tires with a note and give the days you are staying and reservation number if any Spanish lessons are extra viva la raza mi brujo! Jeffrey Howdy, Anyone have any luck shipping tires down into Baja? For instance, to a hotel. I may be heading down there in a week or two and was wondering. Jeff Jones
