knocking stuff off

Post by lafarmer@peoplepc.com » Thu Jan 12, 2006 12:22 am

I know a lot of people ride on the streets almost all the time but I got my 2006 klr in Oct. and I cant help exploring every dirt trail that leeds off the beaten path. I do most of this by myself and have really got myself in some tight spots deep in the woods, Yea I know this is DUMB but noway I could find someone to ride with all these times. Is there others like me out there. I can do some fantastic stuff with J.B. weld after breaking so much stuff. I also am going to have to get a G.P.S. to help me get out of the deep woods if I get stuck. So many twist and turns I could never walk out with out having miles of wrong turns to walk. Started carring a lighter so I can start a fire and not freeze to death if stuck out over night. How do you guys resist the urge to explore. My favorite tool is Google maps on Sattelite setting. You can zoom in on dirt trails. It is amazing how many are around Birmingham Al. Any body else do this. Last thought Dang you guys care alot about oil [Wew[!

It costs money to run a website (server costs, ip bandwidth, etc etc). Definately fair game to post somewhere free first, but I'm not sure that I'd equate $15 with _very_. Tony

Larry, I pretty much quit riding by myself when it comes to exploring. Some of the areas I was going I got to thinking about one day. If I got hurt I'd really be in trouble. I don't have a cell phone but that wouldn't matter as most of those areas don't have cell phone coverage anyway. They are often so remote I'm not sure even the coyotes would find me for a light snack. So I either wait until someone is available for exploring or I take my atv with a friend. And that hasn't been happening often enough either. I do have a GPS and have just started playing with the Garmin Mapsource TOPO program for a trip I'm planning. It's pretty handy and really seems to show the back roads. I also have some good forest service provided maps since my primary local riding area is national forest. Another option might be to get a copy of the Alabama Atlas & Gazetteer by DeLorme. They are usually pretty good for showing backroads. I have some Wolfman tank panniers and a Wolfman Explorer tank bag that stay on the bike. I carry a first aid kit in one tank bag and also I think I have enough survival stuff to allow me to survive one night in misery instead of extreme misery. Doesn't really take up much room. That oil comment is funny. We sure were talking about it a bit last week. I drove through Birmingham last August, twice. Once going south and two weeks later going north. Looks like you have some pretty nice riding opportunities there too. just a word of advice..... let some1 know that u're going on an adventure and when u expect to be back. so incase you're not back by then , a search can be done. and if u're cell phone coverage is available in the woods. turn it on. they can run a trace just in case. remember... tell: the location.... the duration.... and u should call back once u have recpttion. i tell my mum when i want to go on my adventure trips... back when i was 19, hehehehhe. i still do actually, now that i'm 24. hehehehe. i dont want them to get worried. but if i dont come back in time, they should start to worry and at least with the bits of info b4 the trip... they would have an idea where to start looking. i hometown is at the border of 3 states here in malaysia. i can be in anyone of them.. clint
