klr's greatest deficiency, can you lock both brakes.

Post by Gix Repsold » Wed Dec 07, 2005 11:32 am

It is possible! Last Friday on my way a semi blind woman with three kids in her tiny car skipped a stop sign and drove right in front of me! First thought was - SH_T! I'll never stop. Both tyres do lock at the same time, you just have to pull them HARD. Locking the rear was very easy but trying not to lock the front is quite difficult and the whole time all the rumblings about bad brakes kept flashing through my head as the car came nearer and nearer. I missed the car by......too little for comfort. Yeah, everybody's right the brakes are crappy to say the least. This part is for the Sefricans on the list ( Kawa can't bring KLR's into the country quick enough! They're selling withing a week of arriving at he place I bought mine) I went to a friend of who own a precision engineering place and he reckons it's no problem making bigger (320 mm) rotors. The first will obviuosly cost a bit, but if I order 10, he'll make a set, including the spacer and front and rear braided hoses for less than R1000. A lot cheaper than getting one from the States or even Europe. Contact me off list if you are interested at gixrepsold at yahoo dot com Cheers Btw. It seems that every time I really enjoy a ride it starts raining. I actually like dirt roads in the rain. My A18 is still relatively new so I wonder if some are experiencing problems due to brake hose bulging? --------------------------------- Yahoo! Personals Single? I was one of the whiners. I have SS lines front and rear so it isn't the lines. I *can* lock the brakes but it requires an absolutely gorilla effort to do so. So much so that it often requires a second and more concentrated grab by repositioning my hand on the lever to get max braking. Simply squeezing doesn't get it at all when it's a panic stop. The DRZ400S and my memory of my old '88 Honda Sabre 700 would out stop my KLR using two fingers on the lever. That is the sort of braking I really need in traffic here. Normal riding, they work fine, trouble is that almost every ride I have situations that call for more brakes than I have available. It always involves another vehicle violating my right of way so it isn't my riding technique, it's just the fantastic skill level of the other motorists here.

Anyone have a comment about the bars that Dual-Star sells. Except for the grip of money they want for them.
