speedo drive tangs on front hub

Post by ripper197022003 » Thu Nov 24, 2005 9:50 pm

I went on a dual sport ride a couple of weeks ago in NJ the trails where preety tight and lots of whoops the bike took it preety good was hitting the whops pretty hard. I noticed when i got home the speedo stoped working. front brakes where draging bad. The metal tang inside was bent. Was wondering if any one has had this happen befor and what was the reason. I bent the tang back and the speedo works but thier seems to be a buzzing noise from the speeedo. Plus their seems to be more vibration the usally in the front end. Some thing just does not seem right for some odd reason. I have been rnning a 16 tooth for over a year and went back to a 15 when i went to nj. It could be me beouse some times i will ride my street bike then jump back on my klr and think wow this things going to fall apart. Just seems thier more vibrtion at about 4000 rpms. I did notice that the front tire d606 center single nobs are rasied higher, is this do to riding the tire on low air pressure. Any thoughts would be a help thanks. Oh the front brakes a took apart cleaned the caliper and it worked fine intill i went threw some mud again but thier not sticking any more. chris

Chris, The speedo situation is fairly common - one has to be careful to install the speedo hub/drive assy to the wheel correctly, before tightening down. Easy to mess up - so whoever was in there last before you found the problem did it. Just gotta be aware........Sometimes the hub gets so chewed up you either have to replace it, or figure another way to drive the speedo, like a couple of small dowel pins in the hub. all the best, Mike Eagle Mfg & Eng since 1990 San Diego, Ca

I have seen the 610 but not ridden. It is supposed to have a stronger engine, 50HP, better suspension. If its truly only $2000 more than the KLR, it might be a slam dunk, however the gas tank kills it for me. If you are not going to do heavy dirt, trails work, and just want a commuter and light adventure tourer, I think the KLR is more bank for the buck. More mods available too. Way better dealer network.
