sidi discovery & water

Post by Eric L. Green » Fri Jun 10, 2005 8:27 pm

The Sidi Discovery looks like a great boot for when I go on more dirt-oriented rides. One thing I notice, however, is that people complain that it's not watertight. Does anybody know why that's so, given that it claims to be lined with a watertight membrane? Is there any particular point or points where water is getting into the boot that some simple work-around could keep water out? Way back in the day I rode in the rain with regular work boots with plastic garbage bags duct-taped to them to keep them from getting too cold and soggy. So I'm not fussy about appearance when it's raining outside -- I like cold, wet soggy feet even less! -E

Hi Eric, I searched all over for the "perfect" dual sport boot and settled on teh Discovery after hearig lots of good things including waterproofness. I've had them for about a month and so far every time I even go through a few puddles my feet get wet. IT seems to be coming in the seams I think. My right foot gets wet at the arch of my foot and my left foot toes get soaked too!! I am kinda pissed since I paid over $400 CAN for the dam things. I talked to the store I got them from and they are supposed to talk to SIdi. I have heard others say that thei Discovery boots are dry until water come sin over the top!! I'm going to drop a line to the store again. THey are comfy though. JOsh

The problem with any boot is that water sprays directly on the foot when the road is wet. At speed, the water can climb up the outside of the boot and over the top, thats what happens to me anyway. And my Oxtars are 100% waterproof, in that once the water gets in there is no way it is coming back out... --- "Eric L. Green" wrote:

Could be seam sealing, or it could just be that no boot worn outside your pant legs is waterproof enough to keep the rain from running down your pants leg into the boots.

I have nice big tank panniers that deflect the wind off of my legs and tight-fitting rain gear. I've ridden hundreds of miles in the rain with my current boots (which, alas, are disintegrating) and not had more than a tiny bit of dampness that might have even just been my natural sweat (I have sweaty feet). My tank panniers get full of water that blows up under the flap and through their zippers (ick!), but my boots don't. What I've heard about the Sidis, though, is that if you spit on them your feet get wet... thus why I'm wondering why people are saying that, and what's going on here! -E

Uhm, are these boots too chunky to fit under standard rain gear?! -E

I dunno, E! I recently retired a pair of Sidi Vertebras and replaced them with the Strada Tepor Evos (STEs). The STEs have done well in several rainstorms I've ridden through, keeping my feet warm and dry. The only time I've gotten water into the boot so far was when I hit a deep puddle just right--it sent water shooting up the pantleg of my Darien and my sock wicked some of the moisture down into the boot. Maybe that's how folks are getting wet in their Discoveries, too? -- Blake Sobiloff San Jose, CA (USA)

A few shipments of Discoveries came over last year that weren't watertight. I'm not talking like Teva's; I mean if you stand in the swimming pool, after 15-30 seconds your socks get damp. Motonation handled them under warranty, and I think they're fine now. If Motonation says they are waterproof, I think you can rely on them to be, or they'll make it right. I don't know of any other dual sport boots that were advertised as waterproof.

But Motonation no longer says they are waterproof, they say they are "water resistant". This is what's called "moving the goalposts".

thor quadrant atv boots

Post by cbpop13 » Mon Jun 13, 2005 1:04 pm

I noticed the talk about on boots. I just got a pair of Thor Quadrant ATV Boots from Fred Hink at Arrowhead. They are new this year and so far, they are outstanding in all respect. In May, I went on a nine-day ride, on and off road, wearing my new Boots and I am very imprested with the comfort and quality. This ride started in PHX at 107' to NM to include water crossings, rain and back to PHX. The ride was about 30% mild off road and 70% highway. They kept me dry and not to hot, I am telling my friends.
