nklr...garmin v problems

Post by toddfouty » Mon Jun 06, 2005 10:57 pm

Just got back from a 1.6k ride with my new Garmin V. Wasn't too impressed. Downloaded my route to and from my destination. Any time I pulled off the highway to fuel up, the GPS recalculated my route and somtimes changed it. At one point while riding a 160 mile stretch, it told me I needed to make a U-turn to get back on track. Any similiar problems? The detail map was great, no complaints there. The location accuracy and current speed amazes me.

Hi Todd, There is a learning curve with a GPS, you'll soon learn to take it's data as guidance rather than gospel. For example, a mapping program plotted the shortest route for me, and sent me along a snowy frontage road that ran paralell to a highway about 50 yards away. I'm sure it was the shortest route (by like 50 yards or so), but it wasn't the best route. I dutifully rode along it like a dork until I realized what happened (which was a while later on, but that's beside the point). For tracking, or following a track you have loaded (or ridden before and want to ride again), or backtracking , they are extremely handy. However, I suggest if you use your GPS for routing, it may be a better idea to just upload a few key waypoints, use the "go to" feature, and plan your physical route as you go. Thanks CA Stu PS Big thanks to Fred, CMC was a hoot, and I now have an oversized wave front brake rotor.

Just got back from a 1.6k ride with my new Garmin V. Wasn't too impressed. Downloaded my route to and from my destination. Any time I pulled off the highway to fuel up, the GPS recalculated my route and somtimes changed it Usually when I load a route----it is a route I want to stick to----and have laid it out because it is an exiting route with things I want to see on the way. So--------I don't want my GPS re-calculating what I laid out. So--you need to set you GPS so it won't re-calculate---go to your manual and figure this out. Now--if you get off route for gas or whatever---you can re-join your previously loaded route and navigate it as you intended. There are many setup options on the V-----it will take you a while to figure all of them out. Mark Sampson www.bigdogadventures.com
