I have a 2005 KLR650. Love the bike. I also ride a 2001 Goldwing. I
have the first 600 miles on the bike and had the first service done by
the Kawasaki dealer. Seems like there are concerns about the "idler
shaft lever and spring". Has anything been improved on the 2005's?
Would you folks think that it would be wise to keep the original until
the bike is out of warranty and then upgrade the parts? Do you folks
think it is something to have done now?
Any ideas on cost of parts and labor to have dealer take care of this?
Short legs and thinking of lowereing links and shorter stand. I can
probably manage with stock set up though.
Thanks for any advice.

Changing the lever and spring is a fairly easy job, the correct tools are needed of course, Marks website has a step by step, hit that and read it a few times and the whole process goes pretty easy. http://klr6500.tripod.com/doohickey.htm I waited until my warr. was up, just because it was my first "new" bike, and was moving and retiring from one job and looking for a new job and thats how the timing worked out. As for lowering the bike Fred at Arrowhead should have both the doohickey lever/springs and lowering links, but might try setting the fork tubes up an inch or two and see how it feels with just the front end lowered a little. I went to their Site, but didn't see any tanks for the KLR650. Maybe
I didn't look in the right part? The Link to their site is:
http://www.clarkemfg.com/ . They have a phone number on the Site,
call them & check. I am planning on getting one of their 4.2 gallon
tanks for my XR250R Honda. Pete Chester A16

idler shaft lever and spring
I would & did replace my idler shaft lever (doohickey) & spring before
the warranty was up. First of all if it did break before the warranty
ended, sure Kawasaki would need to do the repairs for free. The thing
is, besides the hassel of the bike being down for repairs, there could
be damage & problems from broken pieces that wouldn't show up until
after the bike was out of warranty. Also replacing the doohickey does
not void your warranty on any other part of the bike except for the
doohickey & spring. This is the law as per the "Magneson Moss Act" (I
think that is the right name). Look it up on the Web & read it.
