what's that sound?
What is that new metallic ringing sound I hear coming from my
engine? Can hear it faintly at idle, louder at higher rpms. It is
not harmonic...it occurs throughout the rev range. Sounds like
something metallic is loose and vibrating, but I can find nothing
loose. Any ideas?

what's that sound?
Doohickey or Pipe
Have you upgraded the doohickey?
Have you gotten rid of your stock rear half of you exhaust for a
better after mkt model?
That is where I would start but be aware odd metallic noises can be
normal on these bikes.

I have done neither. The bike has around 2800 miles on it. I've got
a Supertrapp IDS sitting on the bench, but haven't gotten around to
installing it yet. I plan on doing the doohickey this winter.
The ringing seems to be coming from the engine, not the exhaust.
What does the infamous "tweety" sound like?
I recently installed a Dakar nerf barr and aluminum bash guard, but
everything is tight and ringing does now go away when I dampen
vibrations on these two aftermarket items.
Seems like this ringing started all of a sudden.

The aluminum bash plate may well be the problem. The plastic bash plate that comes on the KLR doesn't reflect much sound, but boy howdy that aluminum one sure does. I couldn't believe how much more engine noise I heard after putting one on. It doesn't take long to take the plate back off. Try it and see if the noise goes away, that way you can either keep looking or ignore it depending on the outcome of the test. I reduced the vibration / acoustic issues on my aluminum plate greatly by
doing the this -

what's that sound?
Debris bouncing around the cylinder head, near the spark plug well?
Loose motor mounts?
Would be much easier if I could hear it...

If I remember right it's push-in and twist.
