The torque value is 72 ft lb. You may have to sit someone on the bike to hold the brakes. I have done it alone, but it's easier with help. Wayne

counter shaft sprocket

I just installed a 14 tooth counter shaft sprocket from Dual Star on my 02 KLR 650. The problem I have is that the stock sprocket had a rubber shim on both sides of the sprocket. These rubber shims do not come off. The new 14 tooth sprocket does not have these which causes the sprocket to have about an 1/8 inch of slop back and forth on the counter shaft. When I tighten the counter shaft nut, the nut bottoms out before the sprocket fully seats. The stock sprocket is also visibly wider due to the rubber shims it has. Has anyone experienced this problem??? Is this normal? The bike seems to ride fine, I just worry about the sprocket damaging the counter shaft.

All aftermarket front sprockets come without this rubber damper. It is only there on the OEM sprocket to help dampen the noise of the chain hitting the sprocket. This rubber part is not on the center of the sprocket and has nothing to do with the way the sprocket tightens up on the shaft. Did you use your locking washer under the nut? If you use a quality sprocket, a little play in the fit between the shaft and sprocket isn't necessarily a bad thing. Cheap sprockets are softer with greater tolerances than OEM or better quality aftermarket sprockets and will wear faster, creating more play which could cause wear to the counter shaft. I wouldn't worry about not having the rubber dampers. I doubt that you will be able to hear the difference while you drive your bike. Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com

I have a brand new 14 tooth countershaft sprocket for a '98 KLR that I would like to trade even for a new 16 tooth sprocket if someone has one lying around unused. The one I have is from Parts Unlimited and the number is 13144-1163-14T. I rode the bike yesterday on what will likely be the tightest, steepest trails I will ever encounter and the stock gearing did just fine. On the ride home down the Interstate, however, the engine was having to rev pretty high to keep up with the flow of traffic so I'd like to try the 16 tooth sprocket to see if I can calm things down just a bit on the highway. Thanks. Don Sprinkle Charlotte, NC '98 KLR 650 A12

Hi, Hey just installed a jt front sprocket only to find that the sprocket has horizontal movement now on the shaft. The jt sprocket is noticeabley not as wide as the stock, do I need to add a spacer or something? What do you all think, the jt washer is also missing the rubber washer type fittings of the stock, does this have something to do with it? Thanks, Mick
