Can any benefit be derived by using high octane gas in a KLR650? Someone once told me that compression was too high or low or whatever for high octane to do anything. My dealer told me to use 91 just cause it's there - not much more expensive than 87 and maybe higher quality? We got Sunoco 100 and 104 available up in Loveland CO and I am going rafting on the Poudre today so will be riding by - I'm only talking one gallon of the 100 to tank of 91. Do know that this "race gas" has other additives (detergents and such) that may be beneficial (or not).

It's a tricky subject matter. If you're using 20w60, and if you ride in the Southern Hemisphere, then you definitely want to stay with 91 or better to offset the Coriolis effects on combustion chamber swirl. If, on the other hand, you're running 10w40 anywhere from, oh, Cabo San Lucas to about Portland lattitude, then your best bet is 87. Go much more north from there, and it's 91 or better again. Hi guys, I have owned a 96 klx 650B1 for 3 years and it has been a great bike. I recently rebuilt the top end and it has run great up until yesterday. The problem is that upon returning from a ride I noticed that the air box drain had some milky coloured oil dripping form it onto the swingarm, normaly this is just straight engine oil from blowby gas. I have a suspision that coolant is entering the oil at some point(water pump seal, head gasket). So last night I drained the sump to check the oil for coolant and could not find any conclusive evidence that it had reached the sump or was that serious. I was hopping that someone may have encouted this before and be able to shed some light on this issue for me. I do intend to strip the water pump and service this weekend so it will be out of action for the week. PS checked radiator coolant and looks good, level good.
