hard break in

Post by locker1325 » Sun May 02, 2004 10:11 pm

I have read some interesting things about the break in period. Has anybody checked out the mototuneusa.com website. The guy has some interesting things to say about the break in period and how it is done. Has anyone else done this? I must say I am getting sick of not going past 4000 RPM for 800 miles. chris/2004 KLR

Yes rode the bike through the RPM ranges up and down. Changed the oil and filter when I arrived at home from the dealer the next day 800 miles later from the dealer. 04 FJR 125 RWHP.

That is Kawasaki triing to get you out of the warranty period gently. Vary the RPMs don't hold it at redline. Really not much power to be had on a KLR motor over 5k RPMS. I spend most of my time getting KLR power between 3 and 5k. So what is 7,000 RPM in 5th gear on a stock geared KLR downhill with a tailwind? ;-)

He's talking about modern engines, not KLR engines. :-). (Note: I love my primitive thumper anyhow, even if it IS 1980's technology!) -E

2001 KLR650. Easy, perhaps anal, break-in. 13000 miles - doesn't burn ANY oil no matter what the sustained speed may be. Nothing but motorcycle-specific oil: Spectro conventional until 3000 miles, and from then on Spectro Golden synthetic. And that, in my humble opinion, says it all. "I am getting sick of not going past 4000 RPM for 800 miles." It's 500 miles and then not over 6000rpm for the next 500. I don't believe I've ever reached 6000rpm on my bike. I always do what the manual says. They made the bike, why would I know better than them? You can ride 500 miles in one day easy. Mark Lewis

corbin seat problems

Post by George Basinet » Mon May 03, 2004 9:13 am

Maudibbb, good morning. Have you tried to talk/write to them? Also try to get the original owner to return the seat for repair. I've had a couple of Corbin seats. They usually lasted about 10 years. By that time even if the cover was still good the seating material would have compressed enough to not comfortable. It still is a very salable item. A new cover can't cost too much. Let the new buyer get it repaired locally. George Escondido, CA
