As I was cruising down Highway 1 from Lompoc this morning on my post Christmas ride I was thinking: "what is the highest mileage operating KLR650 on the list?" Also what sort of maintenance and riding were you doing to get such high mileage?? I've read months ago abou someone having 60k+ on their bike, but I want to know how many of you have KLR's over 60k miles and they are still running? Happy holidays, Robin

I believe my old record of approx. 90,000 miles on my 1990 is about to be broken by a gentleman on the list. Others have gone just as far , but they are to busy, or not on the internet. I kept my rpms no higher than 5K and used heavy duty Delvac oil, with a minimum of maintenance overall. I think Conall's record of 90,000 is safe, at least as far as I am concerned. My KLR started making funny noises at about 74,000 in August. By September, it was funny enough that I had concerns about making it home from the rally at Morro Bay, CA. Have ridden it less than 2,000 since the middle of September. Maintenance: Yup, I is a slacker. At 9,000 miles, switched to synthetic and started changing oil and filter every 5 to 8,000. On the trip to Alaska, it went almost 11,000. Bought an extra air filter to speed up oil changes, keep the spare filter cleaned, oiled, and ready to go in a large freezer bag. Clean air is more important than clean oil. (bait) :-) I adjusted the valves for the first time at 50,000 miles. Changed the doohickey at 54,000, not broken. Adjusted the balancer chain every other oil change if I remembered. It's on the third spark plug now, the second spark plug had 53,000 on it and didn't look all that bad. Break downs: Shift lever broke in Prescott Valley AZ. at about 40,000. Found someone to weld it, and still using the original. I carry a spare. Lost the master link about a week after returning from Alaska, that was the first time the KLR was hauled. Carb diaphragm at 70,000, changed it under a shade tree in Ohio. BTW, it's still EPA lean. Ridding habits: My poor little KLR gots to work hard to carry my luggage and me around. I weigh about 30 lb., and my luggage weighs about 270. :-/ It's been ridden for many miles running 5 to 6 on the tach, little time over 6, and never over 7. Gas mileage usually runs in the low 40s, sometimes less than 40. Only time it gets over 45 is when I'm ridding with someone else who is ridding slower than I normally ride. Jack Robinson (FSSNOC) has an A14 with over 60,000 miles on it. It looks new and sounds good. Haven't seen it off pavement since we went to Alaska. (He has a XR650L set up for dirt, sounds good but looks bad.) If a KLR ever goes over 100,000 miles, I think it will be his. Jack rides more conservative than I, except in the twisties, then I can't keep up. Allan A14 81,000 miles

Allen, How dare you post to this forum with such nonsense! Don't you know that the 'experts' here all agree that there is a 100% failure rate with the Doohickey? By stating such an insidious lie, you might actually give some newbie the false idea that the KLR is a reliable motorcycle. You're helping spread this lie as well. I have seen two or three posts over the last couple of months where other owners have opened up thier bikes and found intact Doohickies. I am worried that this is some kind of conspiracy against the aftermarket Doohickey manufacturers!! :-) Steve

Steve, I'm not worried about this! BUT, just because your lever wasn't broken doesn't mean it was working. I'm compiling all the failure modes for Devon to post on his updated web pages. The most common failure is that it simply is no longer adjusting, just because it's crimped into the case, or the spring has run out of stretch. I'm willing to bet that most people who say the lever wasn't broken did not bother to leave the adjustment bolt tight until after they removed the rotor, and THEN watch the lever as they loosened the bolt to see what happens - USUALLY NOTHING! Then tap the side of the lever with a screwdriver handle, and watch the lever jump over about 1/4" (6mm). Most of the time the system does not catastrophically fail, but simply does not work. But if yours is one of the unlucky ones, do you want loose pieces in your engine? Of course, you could simply have been trolling for a response, in which case it worked. :-) Steve, do you still have your Strom? I love mine! all the best, Mike Eagle Mfg & Eng San Diego, Ca.

This was basically the case on my bike - the stock doohickey had been warped and etched quite badly by hamfisted DPO adjustment action, and was binding against the casting behind it. And the stock spring was too long for the current condition of the system. But it hadn't failed... yet. Now with a shorter spring (thanks Mike!) and a proper doohickey, the system is a lot quieter. Oh well, time to plug in the vest (low 30's right now) and hit Mines / San Antonio road, hopefully in the figurative sense only. -S wannabsmooth1 wrote:

I have to work on making my trolling posts a little less transparent!! You make a valid point but I'm sticking to my guns. I still say there are way more perfectly operation KLR's out there than some folks want to admit. > > Steve, do you still have your Strom? I love mine! Yup, The Strom is still in my garage. There is a KLR Bike registry at http://www.micapeak.com/reg/bikes/KLR/ that has a good history of KLRs on it. Conall --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "Allan Patton" wrote:

Allen, What kind of noise is your bike making? Top end, bottom, trans. Are you going to fix it or replace the bike? -----Original Message----- From: Steve Pye [SMTP:spye@...] Sent: Saturday, December 27, 2003 9:47 AM To: DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [DSN_klr650] highest mileage KLR 650
