Hey "list mod"; you forgot to put NKLR. Be careful or you will have
to find another forum.

The Nimda virus is the first one that can be received by just opening a web page that resides on a server that has been infected. Most web servers that are on NT (IIS) were potentially infected. The best protection is to purchase virus checking software from someone like Norton (www.symantec.com) or Mcafee (www.mcafee.com) and keep the dat files updated.
There is also a patch for Internet Explorer on Microsoft's site that can help...I don't have the URL handy but it can be found easily on Microsoft's site...

How about the name/type of virus so we know which ones to look for? (besides that I don't open any attachments from anyone I don't know..)> Watch your emails boys...... > a virus has appeared. Its shut down > two listers so far..

All true on Nimda.
Only users of Windows 2000 & NT can be hit by Nimda just by visiting an
infected web page. Windows 95 & 98 users are safe in this particular case.
Mcafee has a specific (free to Mcafee users) Nimda fix. (DAT file)
Nimda hit us at work last Friday. We isolated it to a portion of the main
server and proceeded to squash it.
Was then deputized by IS folks to help install updates on over 200 hard
drives..(most of my weekend)
I still haven't figured out which hit me at home yet. Wasn't Nimda or Code
Blue or Red. Whatever it was hit my CMOS for starters. System's clean, but
not up to 100% yet.
Whatever Anti-virus software you guys choose to go with.....take Full
advantage of the free updates available, as they come available. -All best
