Hello all I hope you logged some miles this weekend. I've gotten some
great advice and met so good people on this list when I had a KLR.
Now I have a XR650L and I'd like to present a clutch related queston.
I spent Sunday wrenching on the clutch, replacing the cable and
adjusting the freeplay.
She shifts smoother now but the original problem remains. Upon
acceleration the clutch feels as if it partially disengages. My 650
sounds like a 50cc scooter and I have tremendous loss of torque and
power. When I reach speed, or decelerate, I can feel the clutch
engage abruptly and I shoot forward a bit.
When I run her at constant freeway speeds, 75mph not accelerating, I
feel the same problem described above.
I read the 1994 XR650L shop manual and it mentions clutch springs,
worn discs, and excessive oil as points of trouble. The oil hits the
top hole on the dipstick monitor but does not reach above it.
I bought the bike used last summer from its second owner who didn't
know much about the mechanics. Nor did I for that manner. Since I
found this site and got the shop and clymer manual I'm learning
Should I buy new spring and replace them?
Is it common to replace the springs and plates together?
What are the favored plates other than stock?
Are there other parts to consider replacing since I have to open the
crankcase?
I've never done anything more than replace fluids and external parts.
Is this job to complex for me?
Thanks for the advice.
Justin
