Need your collective wisedom on a couple of subjects. Starting to
get ready for Summers riding! Can't wait, its been 20 years since I
was last in the saddle with my old Bultaco 360 frontera!!!! Hope
its as much fun on the KLR!!! Doubt that I will be as wild as I was
in my younger days or you younger dudes!
On to the questions if you don't mind;
1. The one that is most concerning, noticed very small amount of oil
weeping between from cylinder head and engine case on the left
side. Is this normal, will it seal up when hot? Have only warmed
up in the garage. (its a used 2002 KLR with 3500 kms on it) We're
talking VERY small amount.
2. Have done the Doohickey replacement, Valve adjustment, Chain
lube, Oil & Filter, Rad flush, cables and shock protector.
Installed Rad guard and Center stand from Fred. Also installed the
JC Whitney tail bag and fabbed a SS exhaust cover (from a SS thermos
bottle) that was on sale at CTC) in preparation for saddle bags.
What Havce I forgotten?
3. Removed the OEM hand guards, they don't look like they would do
much in the event of a crash anyway. How easy are the ACerbis Rally
brush guards to install. DO you need to get new grips as well? Do
you have to open the ends of the grips up to install? Are the stock
handle bars the right size for the end caps? or do you need to
order a kit?
4. Whats the collective opinion on the balance of the bike given I
have the Tail box? Would I be better with a tank bag vs. saddles?
If so which one do you think is better? Fit, versus size, versus
functionality?
Sorry to be so long with this e-mail. As you can tell, have been
saving them up for a while and with the weather finally breaking
(Let's hope it stays this time) The great white north maybe good
for riding soon!
Your advice is most welcome. Thnks in advance!

It's not normal and I dont know if it will seal up. Could be the gasket wasn't replaced right when someone did the last valve adjustment. or its residual oil from the valve adjustment. I think there is also an oil line going to the head. check if its tight.> weeping between from cylinder head and engine case on the left > side. Is this normal, will it seal up when hot?
The tank bag is easier to get to when your on the bike and can be taken with you. The tail box stays on the bike and is good for tools and such. I have both. the tail boxs gets opened up maybe once a month. the tank bag gets opened up about 6 times a day. There is no balance problem with either. The tank bag (WM explorer) does flop from side to side a little. check Dual Stars bag. I dont have saddle bags so I dont know how they handle> > 4. Tammy at http://www.shop.dualsportrider.org/catalog/default.php has a lot of that stuff, and I think she does have the safety switch bypasses. Krokko -- Dr. J.
