Hi all,
I'm hoping someone on this list has run into this problem
before. A loud high-pitched whine is coming from the engine
of my 2002 KLR 650. The whine is loud enough that it can
be heard about 30 feet away and basically sounds like the
screech that you hear when bare metal is rubbing on bare
metal (e.g., totally worn out brake pads hitting the disk
brake rotor). Here are the symptoms:
- Bike is stopped after working hard but not too hard.
- Elevation above 6000 feet. I was on a trip to the
eastern Sierra Nevada in California when the problem occured.
I haven't tried to reproduce the problem at sea level.
- Engine RPMs below 1000 rpm.
- Temperature guage just a little above half-way point
but not so high that the fan is running.
- Increasing the engine RPMs above 1000 rpm causes
the noise to instantly disappear even if the temperature
guage is above the half-way point.
- Lowering the engine temperature below the half-way
point causes the noise to disappear even if the engine
RPMs are below 1000 rpm.
- Other than the noise, the bike runs great. I set the
idle speed above 1000 rpm as a work around until I got
home.
Thanks for any suggestions. I talked to a mechanic at
the Kawasaki dealership and he didn't have a clue what's
causing the noise.

any idea what's causing this loud, high-pitched noise?

A big single like the KLR will vibrate differently as the rpm changes. Something chafing or making metal to metal contact may make a racket at certain engine speeds and not others. Try reproducing the sound and then tugging on the tank/shrouds/radiator etc to see if you can confirm where the sound is coming from. I only suggest this because I know of a fellow listers KLR that was making an odd screeching noise. We discovered it was his tank making contact with the frame. Steve A11

beware -- the ultimate bead lube
Beware of what you lube your bead with, I have spun tires on rims
before both front and rears when a shop used some sort of special
water soluble bead lube on my Ducati 900SS wheels. I spun the rear
over 180 degrees and the fronts spun at least 60 degrees. The shop
didn't believe me when I told them and were dumbfounded when I showed
them. Good thing they were tubeless. Of Course the Duck has more
power and brakes than the KLR.
