new tires..broken drive hub

Post by firemanbrian2002 » Fri Jun 14, 2002 9:36 am

I rode the KLR in the mud for a while today. With the stock tires I had the bike on its side in no time. I had previously picked up a set of MT21 tires so I headed to the shop and installed the new tires. These tires certainly changed the feel of the bike! It was fun roaring around in the mud and soft dirt with these. Anyway...the old tires popped right off the beads and the new ones seated easily with dish soap. Examining the rear hub during the change over found that one of the six drive lugs on the hub that the sprocket bolts to had broken off. The bike has 400 kms on it. My dealer has ordered another one. Might be something for you guys to have a closer look at when changing tires. I'm still waiting for the 14 tooth front sprocket to arrive. I think this will help alot in the soft dirt. Brian- That is the first I've ever heard of that happening (or least mentioned on the this list)... I would be suspicious of your sprocket carrier and your rear sprocket, and watch it closely. If, per chance, this lug was defective from the factory, then I doubt there is anything to worry about, but if you manage to shear another one off, I'd look at your both your carrier and your rear sprocket and figure out which is mis aligned. With 6 lugs, the sprocket shouldn't have any play, nor should you be able to shear only one off, you would expect that in a perfectly aligned system, the load would be evenly spread out across all lugs... It would appear that in your case, one lug is getting an elephants share of that load, so either the carrier is mis-aligned, or your sprocket is mis-drilled. Knowing how cheap the rear sprockets are, I would be tempted to pull that first, measure the spacing, and replace it if there is even the slightest bit of variation. Never hurts. Good luck and keep us updated! Z DC

Yeah, I've already spent plenty of time in the South NJ sand. But the Seven Mountains start area is about 3 1/2 hrs away from me so it's no day trip. And family obligations don't permit an overnight. Anyone else in the NYC area in the same boat? Devon Tengai650 wrote:
