how far can the green machine really go?
Hey List !!
I am going to be commuting from Columbus GA to Atlanta, Ga every other day, for the next 3 to 4 weeks. The Trip is about 150 Miles or an hour and fourty-five minutes, one way. I 'd like to know if the bike can really take that kind of punishment. I know some you out there have done the transcontinental rides, and others like me just commute around 30 to 50 miles total a day..
Any advice or opinion will be greatly appreciated.

Felipe,
Your KLR won't even blink an eye, at such a short trip. I have ridden my
KLR for hours on end and day after day, with out so much as a hiccup
from her.

I'm not sure your mileage and hours figures add up (150 miles in 105 minutes!), but I can tell you that if you sit on 70-75 mph for however long it takes, you're not punishing the bike. I did a Pancho Villa tour to Copper Canyon a few years back and most everyone rode KLRs supplied by the operator. The bikes that didn't get crashed out did fine, and this included a couple of long days with no speed limits, plus lots of dirt roads. On the last day home from Chihuahua, everyone pretty much had them pegged the whole way with no bad experiences aside from poor gas mileage. One of the KLRs did it all with two people aboard for the whole trp. The KLR is a good machine overall. They'll do 80 mph indicated all day long. If I was doing your commute I'd just check and change the oil regularly, keep the tires pumped up, keep the chain lubed and do the normal scheduled maintenance. Just watch out for the cell-phoners, newspaper readers, make-up queens, and the rest of the idiot drivers out there and you should be fine. Think of it as a lot of shorter trips back to back. __Arden Kysely> I am going to be commuting from Columbus GA to Atlanta, Ga every >other day, for the next 3 to 4 weeks. Assuming you change the oil from time to time, the KLR can run 6000rpm
all day long.
If you have the tools and $20 to spare, put on a 16t front sprocket. It
makes the bike buzz a little less at 80-95mph

First, get a 16T sprocket. Second, the bike can take it. I'll let you know come July 15. I don't have the ambition (or the funding) of Mr. Frazier, but I'm planning a 2 week, 3000+ mile ride through (most of) the North Western US. The route will start in CA, then through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, S. Dakota (I assume N. Dakota is some map maker's hallucination), Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, back to CA. Some of these roads I've ridden before. Others will be new to me. Should be an adventure either way. Now, what was the number for Bill Mayer Saddles....? I have much to do between now and my departure date of 6/29/02. As my route does have some leeway, I'm up for some suggestions. I've already logged a few miles in Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and California. Any suggestions for Utah, Wyoming (Yellowstone, of course), S. Dakota (Mt Rushmore, of course), Montana, Idaho, and/or Eastern WA? If you like western history and culture, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center
is a must see in Cody, WY. Cody is just outside Yellowstone. Far and away
the best place to learn about the west in the world. Nothing comes close.
Make sure you have a full day to check it out.

Dakota: Badlands, Scenic, S to Interior, W. across Cuny Table(Indian taco at Cuny Table Cafe) to Buffalo Gap, thru gap, N. into back side of Wind Cave park, continue into Custer Park, Wildlife loop, Iron Mountain (Skip Rushmore, it's mostly a Winnebago parade). While in Black Hills Check out Nemo, Cheyenne Crossing(excellent Indian taco), Spearfish Canyon. Wyoming: Spotted Horse, Big Horns, Crazy Woman Canyon, Hole in the Wall, Medicine Wheel, Ten Sleep to Lost Cabin, Wood River W. of Meeteetse. I'll be going back to a few of those this August, checking out others I haven't seen yet.

I think it can handle it. I have had no problem doing a trip of about 100 miles each way in one day. I have also had no problem (other than uncomfortable wind at times) riding from Boston to Portland, ME (120 each way) and back. The only advice I could offer is to make sure you have good tires that can provide plenty of grip.

The best change that I made so far was putting street tires and a 39 tooth
sprocket. At 65 I am doing a little over 3500 rpm. Braking was improved with
street tires gas milage improved with rear sprocket. I ride 250 miles almost
every week-end non stop and performance is great. I also have a 2002. Sounds
like a neat ride . I used to live in Columbus and Atlanta but have not been
back since I was a 10 year old 42 years ago. Good Luck TC
