help! is this a safety switch problem?

Post by xactoman2000 » Thu May 30, 2002 8:29 am

I have a 93 klr and every once in awhile the starter button will do nothing. Put the key in, turn it on, bike in neutral and the starter button is dead. No clicks or nothing. Doesn't matter if clutch is in or out, sidestand up or down. I don't know if this is a safety switch problem or if this is indicative of another circuit problem. When this has happened before, I haven't been able to figure out where the problem stems from. Usually I just let it sit, and when I come back to it it works. I have a new starter relay on it, new battery and haven't touched the starter circuit relay. No safety switch mods have been applied. Stumped. I am at work right now with a dead bike and need to figure this out by the end of the day, any help would be appreciated. thanks

I had a KLR once that did that and it was a intermittent problem that I localized to a bundle of wires coming out the lefthand side handlebar grip. I never fixed it because I knew how to get the bike running, didn't want to open up a can of worms that I was responsible for. Besides the bike would only start for me, no one else. Try squeezing the wiring harnesses in different spots if it's not the safety switches. Course I talk to my bike so your mileage may vary. Sorry for the nonspecific advice but it's all true. I actually had the wiring harness on the right side of the handlebars partially unplug itself from the main harness, thus giving me the same condition. Mark B2 A2 A3

Dmitry, Mine also touched the cables to the windshield when way over to the left, I just loosened the grip mount (2 screws) and twisted it back to be behind the mirror shaft (mirror removed of course), then stuck mirror back in. Cables basically point up and forward a bit. Worked for me, your mileage may vary. Duden
