ideas about clicking noise

Post by tigerfaraway » Wed Jan 30, 2002 10:40 pm

To the group wisdom: I just had my left engine cover repalced after knocking a hole in it when the shift lever jammed through it during a fall to that side. Went to the dealer, where it was repaired, and there was an obvious new clicking noise from the engine. I called the mechanic out to listen, and after disallowing his initial explanation ("they all do that, it's the compression release")since it had never sounded that way prior, it was agreed that he'd open it back up to see what was loose. They will probably be finished tomorrow, but are there any ideas as to what may have happened? Seems as if someboby reported that a similar thing had happened to them. Thanks, Jim Hall Kailua, Hawaii

Sounds like the balance chain is not tensioned properly - it is located on the left side of the bike; Check that it is tensioned correctly- which should be done with the left side cover removed. Check that the tensioner idler is not broken - has been known to happen... lol!! (if you dont know what i am talking about then do a search though this archive for "tensioner") How old is the bike?? maybe the chain is in need of replacement. I know that it is strange that it's making the noise now just after having work done to it... but dont overlook the obvious!! cheers David A1 x2 -----Original Message----- From: tigerfaraway [mailto:tigerfaraway@...] Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2002 2:40 PM To: DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_klr650] ideas about clicking noise To the group wisdom: I just had my left engine cover repalced after knocking a hole in it when the shift lever jammed through it during a fall to that side. KLRistas: Since we're talking clicking noises, I finally got around to inspecting the broken parts that came off last months balancer mechanism repair (Done @ the dealer. Wish I coulda wrenched it meself). The two parts were: "SPRING IDLER"(92144-1860) "LEVER IDLER SHAFT"(13168-1436) The left side of the engine was much quieter after the repair (mileage: 21,000 mi.). I wonder how long this part should last, and if other parts (like the balancer chain) are gonna go at a certain mileage. Is this lever the infamous "doohickey" of yore? Or are other balancer parts the unworthy ones for other wrenchers? Just wanna compare notes...........thanx........... Heehaw! Steve Miller A14 "The Mule"

In my case, the tensioner spring was still doing its job. I found out that the doohickey was broken when I removed the magneto cover for inspection. RM

Sometimes you can't tell until after you've removed the magneto. Ask Matthew. :-) Rich in Tucson 94 KLR650 86 VFR750

Mine seemed fine when I first looked at it. It's when I loosened the bolt and realized that the doohickey was just flopping around that I realized something was wrong... RM
