nklr:what?s the biggest thing you have seen flying down the roa

Post by Mike Render » Wed Dec 19, 2001 9:15 am

Hey Brad, I bet that got your adrenaline pumping. I had an experience with about four or five 1 - 1.5" PVC pipe that were about 6' long. I was coming down an exit ramp that was nearly straight when the pick-up in front of me lost the aforementioned pipe. I was following to closely and ended up hitting three of the pipes in rapid succession. I was able to manuever so that I hit them fairly squarely but still ended up about sliding 3 to 4 feet to my left. They weren't huge but they scared me to death and taught me a quick lesson in keeping an open area around me. Mike Render A14 PS This happened years ago on a 1974 Yam. RD350 set up as a cafe racing bike.

I've never seen flying drywall, but there are enough step ladders along side the highway for me to put any kind of construction vehicle at the top of my don't-follow-on-the-freeway list. A close second is garbage trucks--you never know what kind of slimey stuff is leaking from them. I'll pass any vehicle that I don't feel safe following, and I'm prepared to tell the friendly highway patrolman that I'm speeding for safety's sake. Not that it will help, but maybe it's one he hasn't heard yet! Arden Kysely

Brad, It probably wasn't off a truck or construction vehicle at all. Likely some jackass tied it to the roof of his car, and was taking it home when the free twine they give away at Home Depot failed at 65mph. I try VERY hard not to ride anywhere near dumpster transporters, pickups loaded without a tarp, furniture tied to the rook of a honda civic etc. I once saw a king-size box spring laying in the right lane of I-95 one time driving south through Maryland. The most massive thing I have ever seen actually flying was a 200-250lb deer when it jumped over a divider directly in front of an SUV, which was three cars ahead of me. I actually hit my brakes before the guy who hit the thing, and so was able to easily slow down and pull between the lanes so I didn't get rear-ended. The SUV immediately left the scene, and as I pulled around the poor thing was still twitching, covered in broken glass and plastic bits and anti-freeze. Devon A15 Brad Davis wrote:

Schuykill Expressway; that reminds me of my academy years at Valley Forge Military Academy. I must have traveled that expressway on leave or while awol hundreds of times. The biggest one I have seen is a full size camper top get airborne off the back of a pickup. Peter A-14 Tengai650 u.edu> cc: bradcdavis@..., DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [DSN_klr650] NKLR:What?s the biggest thing you have seen flying down the road? 12/19/2001 10:34 AM About 10 years ago on the Schuykill Expressway near Philthadelphia... a small stake-body truck crashed northbound, launching several 50lb bags of cement. One bag went through the windshield of an oncoming car and killed the driver, causing a multi-car pileup southbound. I didn't actually see it, but I was about 30 seconds behind the action. Was stuck there for 2 hrs until I decided to follow the lead of a few other cars and roll over a mile backwards on the shoulder and back down the nearest on ramp. The biggest thing I actually saw was a 1/2"-thick sheet of ice that lifted off the roof of the car in front of me. The sheet was as big as his roof and hit my car square on the windshield. No damage, just a few "oh shit!"s. Mark B2 A2 A3 At 10:15 AM -0500 12/19/01, Mike Render wrote:

It's 1993 on I-405 southbound in Seattle, a nice dark section just north of Tuckwilla and I'm cruising along at something around 70 on the Katana. So far pretty uneventful until on the inside of a long right hand corner there is a black/grey camper shell in the middle of the road. You know the type, the things you put over the back end of a pickup to enclose it. I did the amatuer thing of locking the rear brake at first, got off of it, then used the curbing as a bit of a berm to get around it while full on the gas. It was probably the first of three wheelies I ever did on that bike, however brief. The pickup that had been following me never had a chance and literally exploded bits of the fiberglass canopy into the air before he spun off into a guardrail. Long story short, I got away unscathed and with a heart rate that was somewhere higher than healthy, the bike had an odd looking scuff on the back tire that buffed off and I gained a lot of instant experiance in how to throw a 450lb bike around. The pickup? Totaled! If it wasn't for a glint off the top of the top from the rain as it sat in there I'd have hit it dead on at about 70. No one ever came back to get it and I did stay around long enough to let the state trooper know it wasn't this drivers fault. The other driver could not believe I was still alive (ditto!) but was so shaken up she just wanted her husband. Keep an eye out guys!

I see this kind of crap all the time. I think the cops instead of busting you for doing 15 mph over the speed limit should be severely ticketing over laden construction vehicles with stuff hardly if all tied down. A friend of mine was severely injured, (almost killed) and disfigured for life. She lost her right eye by a piece of scrap iron coming through her windshield. I have seen tables, couches, mattresses, dry wall, fenders off trailers, and you name it fall off cars and trucks. Criswell Brad Davis wrote:

One rainy afternoon, on I-95 between D.C. & Baltimore, I had to dodge a full-size aluminum extension ladder (unextended at the time) that was cartwheeling through the air at 60 mph! It came off the top of a pick-up in front of me. Fortunately, I was in a car with good tires. Jay in PA

I was actually kinda glad when I saw a cased chainsaw skidding down I- 94 at 70 in front of me. Not a lot of traffic so I stopped and ran back to pick it up. Nice $200 saw, started right up. Maybe a good lesson for the guy who lost it! dan

I once encountered a port-a-potty in the middle of Highway 70, which runs E to W in NC. It was the weekend after I returned from Desert Storm. I was at the beach with a friend and I had just met my future bride. I promised my mother that I would return home and attend church on Sunday with her. I got up about 4am and started home in cool temperatures and fog. I was doing about 65mph and I was the only car on the road, when out of nowhere I saw an outline dead ahead. I yanked the wheel left and immediately right. As the left two wheels dropped the off the shoulder I got into a left-hand skid. I was getting all four of my 31x10.50 BF Goodwrench A/Ts back on the blacktop and counter-steering like mad as the Toyota 4x4 started to bounce. Have you ever experienced the split second when you realize you're no longer in control of your destiny? (Of course you have, your motorcyclist) I was there. After the second bounce I just knew I was going to roll down the road and make an ugly mess. I literally let go of the wheel and thought "GOD it's all yours". The next bounce rolled the left rear tire off of the bead and I slid around backwards to a stop facing the direction from which I came. I sat there for what seemed like a couple of minutes (probably seconds) thankful to be in one piece. I snapped back to reality when I saw a set of headlights in the distance. I pulled off the road and went about 100 yards in front of the obstruction to alert the on-coming driver. I flashed my lights and blew the horn but the driver later told me he thought I was some Waco trying to get a ride. As he passed me I couldn't watch, I should have though, it sounded cool. All I heard was screeching tires for what must have been several hundred feet. The guy escaped damage to vehicle and person. He did come back and help me change my tire though. He was very apologetic for not stopping in the first place. We also went back and pushed the port-a- john onto the shoulder. I was thankful that I had been running my tires with low pressure to get all of the tread on the road. With that light truck they had a tendency to wear in the middle. Probably saved my life. This is the closest I've come to being road kill, without an insurance claim anyway. Joe Simoneaux
