klx650 questions

Post by drdezmo@yahoo.com » Sun Nov 04, 2001 7:56 am

My dealer has street legal KLX650 for sale. It appears to be clean and original. I'm unfamiliar with the bike. Could someone answer a couple of questions? 1. What years was it made? 2. Does it use the KLR650 motor? 3. Does it have any reliability issues? 4. What do they sell for? Thanks! Mike

Mike, The KLX is a great bike, all the KLR guys are trying to make their KLR's like the KLX :^). Its more dirt worthy then a KLR, but less long distance road worthy. KLX has better frame, forks, brakes, KLR has more comfy seat, bigger gas tank. Probably some other differences I'm not remembering right now. If the price is right, buy it, you won't regret it. Check out the KLX group here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KLX650 Check out this comparison test about the KLX, DR650 and XR650: http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mccompare/opendp.html Here's some articles about the KLR if you're interested: http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mckaw/99klr650.html http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mccompare/valuebike/00valuebike.html More comments inline below. Like any bike, depends on condition. Being that the KLX did not sell in big numbers, they can be often be purchased at bargain prices. If you want a big bore dirt bike, and you can afford it, get either a KTM 520 or XR650R, and Baja Kit it. Everything else is a big step down for dirt riding. Russell

They don't call him "Dan The Man!" for nothing! Ed (needs a ride real bad too, maybe this week I'll freak out, I mean sneak out. And about that DRZ-E, yeah, me too, me too...)

Hey Russell, what are the differences between these two bikes? I know the KTM is more expensive, is it worth it? I rode with a guy who had a dual sported 520 S/XC (I think) this Saturday and he was really fast. He was an older gent, too, like mid 50's or older and faster than he had a right to be. I gotta admit, running them GP's like you do sure looks like a lot of fun, plus it seems there would be a lot more people I could crash into. Thanks Crash Aholic Stu

handling problems

Change the tires. They will kill you in deep sand. I went to the AVs, and am still running the recalled tire at 40/36 psi. They cut a groove through the South Carolina sand without all that snaking. Traction sorta' sux, though. James in SC.
