So I picked up my '88 KLR last Friday and I'm wondering how I tell if
it's got the stock springs in it. I'd hate to go upgrading it it's
already got progressives... I assume I need to actually look at
them, or can you tell just by "feel"? And if I do look at them, how
will they look different?
Thanks,
John

stock springs?
John-
The easiest way is to unscrew one of the fork caps and lift the spring
out. They don't need to pulled all the way out... If you've got
progressives, you see immediately that the spring coils are wound
progressively tighter towards the top of the spring. On the other hand,
the stock spring coils are evenly spaced with about 1/4" perhaps between
the coils. Good luck.

stock springs?
John,
The easiest way to tell about your springs is,
if you nail you front brake and you barely slow down but your
front fender nearly hits your tire, you have the stock springs.
If you nail your front brake and you barely slow down but your
front fender doesn't hit your front tire, you have Progressive
Springs.
