heat shield stuff under side panel ?

A strange thing happen today.... I was a million miles from anyplace going through a gravel based low water crossing. I was in first gear; going slow; my feet up off the pegs and high so they wouldn't get wet and... well, they got wet.... The chain jumped off the rear sprocket. I was lucky not to drop the bike or that the chain didn't jam (called "chain suck" in the bicycle world). I pushed the heavy KLR through the gravel and 8" deep water and remounted the chain [KLRs don't push well in wet gravel and running water]. The chain wasn't loose at all; in spec. I have been riding over 25 years and never had a chain come off. I haven't even heard of anyone throwing a chain on a modern (well maintained) bike. Any ideas what happened? The only thing I can think of is a small rock rode the chain into the rear sprocket and derailed it. Pat Austin TX

Hey Pat Well one day I was as far as you from home, in deep mud. All of a suden the bike would not go forward anymore. Chain was off behind the proket... I couldn't put the chain back on, there was way too much mud and the ground was not falt at all. Well started pushing the bike towards the highway, pushed it for allmost 1 mile... till i realized that the chain poped back on by itself..so much for all the pushing.. Pat, How old is that chain? If its worn, its going to be loose on the sprockets themselves, even if the chain slack is correct...more chance of what you're thinking happening... Rich

Hi everybody, I'm in digest mode right now, but I havent seen the right answer for this heat shield yet. My heat shield fell off along time ago, and I bought some stuff called "heat shield" form Fast Freddy. It is thin insulation with aluminum facing, and a sticky back. I covered the rear right side panel over a year ago, and I dont think this stuff is coming back off. Make sure to cover the bottom inch of the panel, thats where they melt, even with the stock insulation, because it dosent cover it.
