I got a reply to my recent posting:
Van, we are in a major flux here trying to figure out who should lead this
democracy. I agree with you on the soldier bit so much that I think the next
time some country around the world wants the US to come rescure their ass
(with our soldiers and treasure) we should keep them home. We buried way too
many of our boys and spent way too much treasure in the 20th century trying
to help other countries have the same crazy Govenment as we.
Cheers,
Ron Criswell
I'd like to say that whilst most of us should be grateful for the help given
by the US in the past, much of it has not been solely out of altruism, in
that a thing called "U.S national interest" has come into it. We can see
this demonstrated in the highly selective way in which the US decides to
intervene/support (or not. e.g supporting Iraq when Iran was the biggest
threat...refusing to condemn Israel-whatever they do...using massive
military force in support of those well-known democracies: Saudi and Kuwait,
whilst fighting on the same side as Syria! turning a blind eye to Turkey's
treatment of it's Kurdish population while "protecting" those in Iraq;
Embracing China out of the prospect of economic gain, and constantly playing
down its human rights abuses. I could go on but I think the point is made. I
might add that the UK is/has been as culpable, especially when we had an
Empire.
