I recently acquired a used (2000) KLR650 and have been reading posts for a while about changing countershaft sprockets and wonder this: If 99% of my riding is currently commuting on twenty miles of Interstate, would it be a good idea to change to a sixteen or even better a seventeen tooth sprocket to reduce my RPM's and save a bit of wear on my engine? I seem to cruise at around 75-80 MPH and I'm guessing that I'm not doing my baby any favors by revving it at 6000 RPM for forty minutes a day. Do I need to change the length of my chain when I swap sprockets or is there enough room to use the adjusters? I've never owned a chain drive bike before. Thanks for your input. Yes to the 16T it will work fine...the KLR can't pull a 17 or equivalent...and because the 16 barely fits I doubt a 17 would... Kurt

Hey, Just wanted to point out that you can EASILY swap your rear sprocket for 40t(essentialy the same as 1 tooth up front) alot faster and with smaller tools ( I used my stock tool kit). [...] Common wisdom is that 17T won't fit, and any further ratio reduction needs to be done at the rear sprocket. A 16T should go on and you shouldn't need to alter the chain with only that change. Your revs would be 15/16ths of what they are with a standard front sprocket.

Seems to me that the LT would be a lot better for your commuting task. What made you buy the KLR? I like the message versioin. That way I can catch up on the various topics on my schedule vs real time. I find gems of varying quality in the posts every day. IMHO chat sesions are fine for social, one-on-one conversations but email / posts should be used for information rich discussions. As an example, if you did not happen to be on-line when Eldon Carl was available you would not be able to go back and search the archives for his recommendations regarding suspension, chain balancing adjustment, etc..
