You'd be applying a high heat to a small area which would result in expanding the metal in the hot area causing distortion. My hot air gun goes to about 1050 degrees F and I'm not sure that would be hot enough to be effective for stripping automotive finishes that were correctly applied in the first place. But I'm comfortable in suggesting that it would be enough to damage the finish where you would then have to do something. You probably will require either a mechanical, chemical or combination of both methods to strip to bare metal. Best,

Can a hot-air paint stripper be used for removing paint off of metal automotive panels?
Or are they limited to housing interior applications?
Thanks,
Josh
