klr cruise speed question
I have a friend who is putting a Versy engine in a KLR frame. The big problem is the oil filter placement. I have seen one KLR with a modified KLR lower frame with the Versy engine. My problem with that conversion is the KLR engine is a low rpm torquey engine which to me is why it is better for the dirt. The same reason folks like Harley engines. Low rpm and a broad powerband. The Versy redlines at 10500 rpm and doesn't really get going until you wind it up. II don't think gearing will get the job done (for me). I don't know if any of you remember the early 70's 125 Yamaha YZ's that had nothing on low end but about halfway up the hill, would come on pipe (very exciting).

I have said this before the most fun I have ever had, later in life, is riding and throwing around a Suzuki Rm 125. Light, fast for me, and when you crashed
you could pick it up and keep going, most of the time!

70 mph in india!
If you did 70mph in India you probably would not be visiting to many other Country's! and any road that is decent has got to much traffic on it to get up to that speed i would think, our KLRs would be perfect over there but don't know if you can rent or even if they have them over there, just a thought.

I would rather do South America.....if I could bypass some Central American countries. I have been there some. Chile is beautiful. Parts of Argentina are similar. I did a day trip to Uruguay and would like to see more as well as more Brazil. Venezuela has a lot to see but Hugo needs to retire. I think Colombia is getting safer. Ecuador and parts of Peru have interested me also. Problem is getting through some parts of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
Any listers have that Royal Endfield Bullet. It looks cool but have heard 70 mph is about top speed. Why don't India make a Matchless like Dick Mann rode?
If they made a fairly decent gravel road to a viewpoint where you could see Everest maybe I'd be interested in India / Nepal?
The Andes are pretty dang impressive (and closer).

klr cruise speed question
My point was the YZ had no low end (torque-broad power band) which made it more difficult for good all around trail riding). It would come on pipe at the wrong time. If you are riding a road race or trying for an all out land speed record, a broad power band or low end doesn't mean much. But for all around riding, I will take a bike with a torquey engine any day. Jest a preference. Don't get me wrong, I love my Versy but don't think the engine is right for plonking through the woods.

I use Shell Rotella Dino 15 / 40 W ........ and use the Eldon Carl specified amount on oil filling (2 quarts plus 19 ounces if I remember correctly). Why, Eldon Carl must be a very smart man. smile (2 US quarts) plus (19 US fluid ounces) = 2.45460295 liters which, incidentally is 'very close to the 2.5L number on the case for volume. Carl's .05L less would account for trapped fluid. I asked a friend whose business is teaching small engine repair at a local Jr College if that would hurt it? He said no as you are running it at about 2/3rds it's powerband (5200 rpm roughly). Also very good advice. Crossing the Judean desert (Feb 1997) on our way to see the Dead Sea, and specifically the Fortress Masada, we were in a Subaru rental car, hammering along at 95mph indicated. I turned to one of my Lt's. and said, "How fast do you think this car will go?" He immediately replied, "95mph?" No. It will do 97mph. We continued on for a few miles; the Ensign in the rear asked, "Why aren't we doing 97mph?" I looked at him in the mirror and smiled, "You don't want to be to hard on the motor." If the IDF had stopped us = me, I would have gotten more than a 'ticket', probably accommodations for at least a night.... The Judean desert would have been a lovely place for a KLR.... SNIP Some say Kawasaki is going to put the Versy engine in the KLR. As a Versy owner also, I don't that engine is right for the KLR for dirt use. I like the big thumper power characteristics of the KLR for off road. Maybe they could make a 800 cc thumper with about 50 rear wheel horsepower and 6 gears. That would be better in my opinion for our uses with a KLR. Gee maybe with EFI too. > > Criswell Realistically, I don't think there will be many new motorcycle offering until we see a huge turnaround in the world economy. China might be the next be market place, however, their historical limited enforcement of copyright laws, they might just reverse engineer a bike like what you describe and only offer it for sale in China--and we would never see it here. The Versy engine in a KLR type frame--could be used as is; changing the sprockets to make it what you wanted it to be = stump puller or a knobbie tired rocket ship with nice forks. Surprises me someone has not come up with a plug and play DS exhaust system. There are some Versy frankenbikes out there that can be seen in various forums. revmaaatin. On Jan 1, 2011, at 7:21 PM, Jim Douglas wrote:
