petcock vacuum diaphragm vent
I have just heard about a diaphragm failure that puts gas in the vacuum
line. Has that ever been a problem to anyone's knowledge?

It was a rare occurance at my friend's repair shop. But, with more and more ethanol
related failures of other carb parts, it wouldn't surprise me if diaphragms failed more often now.

<><><><><><> <><><><><><> Robert, A leaking petcock diaphragm is a fairly common issue on KLRs. That I think is the main reason folks swap to manual petcock operation like the blockoff plate setup I sell or a manual petcock from another bike. When the petcock diaphragm leaks it can restrict fuel flow as it might not be opened all the way. It also usually leaks fuel into the vacuum line which richens the air/fuel mixture after the throttle plate. At speed this often isn't noticed but idle is where it usually becomes obvious there is a problem. Often the bike won't idle when warm as there is too much fuel for the amount of air and the operator turns the idle speed up on the right side of the carb. That opens the throttle plate just a bit which lets more air into the intake and leans the mixture. Of course the idle is now too high but the bike runs. The three fixes I know of are to replace the diaphragm with another stock diaphragm or replace the petcock with another stock petcock, remove the diaphragm and install a blockoff plate setup turning the petcock into manual operation or replace the petcock with a manual petcock. I had my diaphragm leak in spring of 2009 if I recall correctly. Putting a Mity Vac on the petcock vacuum nipple and applying negative pressure pulled fuel into the clear line. Luckily RevMaaatin had given me a replacement diaphragm and it only took about. 20 minutes to fix the petcock. The fix isn't so simple on the side of the road or trail. Nice place, at the foot of Guanella Pass. Grant is probably best known as the starting point for the Elephant Ride, second weekend in February each year.

When mine sprung a leak it actually sprayed fuel at the base of the engine near the starter.
Was pretty OBVIOUS to me I had a problem. But maybe not to dumb people.
