hello
I am a new member on this discussion board. I am once again a happy
KLR 650 owner. I once owned a 1994 KLR 650 which I regreted getting
rid off. During the interim, I road some run-of-the-mill street
cruisers which were fun for the time but not as adventuresome as the
mighty KLR!! I now own a 1990 KLR 650 and will need to strip it down
to make sure she is a runner. Only obvious thing I have noticed so
far is a noise it makes like "tick and crackle" sound as it warms up?
I am wondering if it is a valve adjustment thing? Anyway, I look
forward to getting great information about the best dang motorcycle
on the planet and possibly meeting some fellow riders in the area. I
live in Riverside California. Have a good day all!!

Hi Brian, welcome to the list, and back to KLRing! I wish I could give appropriate credit for this, but I can't seem to find the original post in the archives. Someone on the list, a true poet, said, "A tappy valve is a happy valve." That's absolutely dead-bang descriptive of what a normal and "happy" KLR engine should sound like. I'm not sure if the "tick and crackle" you mention is that sound, or something else... I have a bunch of procedures and stuff at: http://klr6500.tripod.com/ Although the links page needs work (additions) there is some stuff there that should take you to other points of KLR interest. Best of luck with the new bike! Mark KLR650 Motorcycle Pages: http://klr6500.tripod.com/ HomePage: http://home.adelphia.net/~msaint/index.html My Adelphia Email can be "iffy." hello
After recently crashing my ZRX 1100 i decided to get myself a 1991
KLR 250, "keep it green i say" for the winter months, here in sunny
North Wales. And i must admit its brilliant fun. I havn't been able
to do any sort of off roading yet as my wrist is a little weak after
the accident.I have a 1001 questions as i have no manual but they
can wait for another time

G'day all,
Just thought i'd say 'Hi' to all.
Looking at purchasing a KLR650 2004 model as cheap as chips here in
Aus.
Had an order down for a Vstrom but not being delivered until Late
Sept and with a change of circumstances i need transport NOW. So
looking at this option.
I use to commute about 40miles per day on Highway and weekend touring
riding, all on tarmac...would this bike suit my purpose??
Any Aussie KLR rider out there?
Thanks
Paul

Howdy from the sunny side of the earth (at this moment)
You won't go wrong with a KLR-650 - although if all your riding is on
the street, are you sure you want a dual sport and not street?
There are going to be several people who chime in saying "get the
V-Strom too", maybe even "instead of the KLR"
Mike
(wish we had the ZRX S here like you do - we get only the R)

hello
I own a KLR and an SV650. Haven't ridden the 650 V-Strom, but since
it's based on the SV and shares the same engine, there should be some
similarity on the road.
For highway riding, I naturally prefer the SV650. It produces about
twice the horsepower, cruises 10-15mph faster at the same level
of "engine strain", and is about forty pounds heavier claimed dry
weight, though with a full tank of gas in the KLR that gap narrows.
The increased weight, along with the shorter profile, really make a
diffence with strong wind gusts which are quite common in the
southwest U.S. desert where I ride.
I suspect the dual sport version of the SV is a little heavier than
the street version, so the weight will work in favor of the KLR off-
road. If I were buying fresh today, I would have a very tough time
deciding what to do. I love my SV650. But I really like the KLR as
well. I guess it all boils down to how much off-roading you do and
whether the added weight of the twin will be an issue.

hello
Bottom line, get the KLR if its cheap as chips.
Yes 40 miles of pavement is nothing for it.
The KLR is a fun bike to ride period.
Sorry not from Oz, but have friends that live there.
