Correct me if I`m wrong? But I believe it would be either a XT500 or a XT600, not a XT550. I had the XT600, it was an awsome bike. It had kickstarter &was easy to kickstart it when the engine was cold and it ran like a champ. It was definetly more dirt worthy than my KLR will ever be. It wasn`t street legal so I never had it on the highway. The only drawback I had with the bike was that it was extremely hard to kickstart the bike when the engine was warm. I don`t know why that was? My 2 cents worth anyways. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

nklr anybody know the good/bad of yamaha xt 550?
The XT500 was made from 76 to 81, the XT550 was made in 82 & 83, the XT600 was made from 84 to 95.
All the XT models were street legal. If you had a TT model, those were not street legal.

Reminiscing . . .
I remember drooling over a TT500 when I was a child
(late 70's early 80's)-- it was powerful/strong like a mule. We were riding 80's and 150's and we didn't associate with the Big Guys, except for smiling at the owner when he rode by us. It was like a legend--like seeing a character from "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly." We'd wisper to each other about how amazing it was, because it could hear us from quite a distance and we didn't want to call attention, in case it was "The Bad" guy. We became friends but were never allowed to ride it; it was "The Good" guy, "for sure."
When I started looking for a dual-sport, the first bike I looked up was a TT500. First of all, I didn't know it wasn't street legal, and, I believe it's been out of production for many years. Then I found the KLR650--a bigger engine, bigger gas tank than any other dual-sport, and I went for it. Can't wait to get on one again...
