Vinyl electrical tape? Check cable for signs of water intrusion or corrosion? New cable: $11.95 @ ronayers.com Cable clamp ~ off-road bike. Cable guide ~ on-road bike? Clamp: cracking of sheath due to flexing of cable? Wire(?) Guide: wear of sheath due to movement/abrasion over guide? ED

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> ED, I'm figuring since the cable was leaking grease it didn't get any moisture inside. I had no idea a cable was so inexpensive. But shipping as I recall from Ron Ayers is pretty pricey when it's a small order. I think you hit the cons of each type of cable containment device. I'm gonna give my homemade wire type guide a try and see how it works. Thanks for your comments.
