klr diesel

I know there were plans to market a civilian version, but (supposedly) the military demands put that on hold. I can't believe they would really use an unprotected motorcycle in Iraq/Afghanistan for general military use in light of IED's and I don't think the attrition rate on these are that high. Perfect, maybe. Cheap, no. According to their web site: ".....NOTE: Due to increased production requirements for our military motorcycles, HDTUSA has had to delay production of our commerical models. We will update all of our potential civilian customers via our newsletter, so please sign up so we can provide you with the latest information...." The military wanted to eliminate all gasoline powered equipment (portable pumps, generators, motorcycles, etc) and convert everything to diesel or JP-4/5 to reduce inventory problems and improve safety. HDT is a small outfit, and will probably be kept busy for some time filling military contracts. The have advertised a civilian version, but I recall the published prices were two or three times the cost of a stock KLR. Given the ready availability of gasoline and the steep cost of the motorcycle, I think most people would vote with their wallets. Yes, it would be really cool to have all that torque and something approaching 100 mpg, but I don't think I'm willing to spend $12-15K for it. If I was going to spend anything near that kind of money I would start with an Airhead R80GS and go from there. Dave C
