Re: ARE THESE ARMS MOVING FOR REAL!!!! THEY LOOK TOO HUMAN!!!!
Hey, thank you my friend for communicating with this fellow about the arms. It was funny that one day I was just going through youtube and I found this robot without the head piece on. Right away when I seen the arms moving like that, I really thought someone was inside the robot. Thanks Guys for researching this. This would be wonderful. Victor:) B9-0082 -----Original Message-----

Re: ARE THESE ARMS MOVING FOR REAL!!!! THEY LOOK TOO HUMAN!!!!
Derval just sent me a link that explains how the arms work. It's sheer genius in its simplicity!
One thing we didn't realize is that the claws/wrists are very lightweight (claws may be cardboard). But the basic design opens a lot of possibilities.
Check it out: B9 Robot - Arms mechanism . B9 Robot - Arms mechanism . 24 Volt DC Gear Motor. B9 robot Bra os do Rob B9 - Perdidos no Espa o. View on www.youtube.com Preview by Yahoo
I sent him a note asking what the silver "wire" part is made of; it appears to be a malleable metal.I'll post when he writes back.
And here's a short video of Derval's B9 with his head on:

The bubble is non-standard - but I think it looks pretty good! Again - here's a great example of what can be done on a budget - all it takes is creativity and imagination. Kudos to Derval!

This is so awesome!! Scratch built everything! Very clever what he did this with the arms and the entire character of the Robot really. I'm still not clear as to how the mechanism is put together. You know you have issues when you look at a video over and over and can't quite figure it out, lol

Re: ARE THESE ARMS MOVING FOR REAL!!!! THEY LOOK TOO HUMAN!!!!
He took a unique approach to attaching the arms to the torso; rather than cut holes, he put a piece of pvc pipe through the torso wall. The angled "fin" on the pipe holds the arm bellows extended.
Then he took a reversible motor, made a bracket and attached it to the pvc. He shaped a piece of wire (he said it was heavy-gage copper wire) and attached it to the motor shaft. At the wrist end of the wire he attached a cardboard "bearing" (just a circle that would fit in the arm bellows), put the wire through it and added the wood end piece. The cardboard "bearing" goes in the arm bellows about where the wrist would be so the claw/wrist can bobble.
By controlling the direction of the motor, the arms move with a springing motion due to the flexibility of the wire and arm bellows.
The arm has to be very light - or you need to find materials that will support the weight of the items you use.
I'm still amazed at how this simple mechanism can look so realistic!!

Re: ARE THESE ARMS MOVING FOR REAL!!!! THEY LOOK TOO HUMAN!!!!
Wow, I wonder how many times he had to work it before he figured out the weight the arms had to be before it worked or if he only made one attempt. Thanks for the clarifying! Makes sense now. Sandy

Now, THAT is elegant. The design is so simple that I honestly didn't grasp how it worked, until I saw it in action. Nice work.
