Rebuilding carbs. - Needle size question

Post by Ron Zeraldo » Thu Mar 17, 2005 7:20 pm

I have purchased the Moss Motors 'Master Rebuild Kit' to overhaul the carbs. on MGTC 5911 and have meticuously cleaned, polished, and installed all the new components with ease including new throttle shafts, gland packing etc...However, I have run into an issue with the jet needles...the old ones removed from the piston read "ES" (standard size), I ordered new "ES" needles from Moss (part #374 - 080) and when comparing them side by side it turns out that the new needles are approx. 1/8" shorter than the old ones! Does matter? Can I use the new needles or should I send them back to Moss explaining my problem? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Ron J. Joe Curto is probably the expert here but I'll put my two cents worth in. The various needles control mixture per the diameter of the needle at various points along it's shaft. So if the two needles (old one and new one) match up diameter wise along the shaft that is good. As per the length, does the new needle fit into at least the top end of the jet when raised fully and choke pulled down fully? If so then any part of the needle imbedded deeper in the jet is a non issue. If the end of the needle rises above the jet then you need the extra length. Guess that is more like three cents worth, sorry. David Edgar, TC 5108 El Cajon, California

Ron, Go to http://www.winsu.co.uk/ There you will find a programme to download which provides information on all the SU needle dimensions. Never used it but it looks v. interesting. Peter. Ron Zeraldo wrote:

Ron: The overall length is not important. Skip Kelsey....................................... At 10:21 PM 3/17/2005 -0500, Ron Zeraldo wrote:
