TC Windscreen Wiper Motor gear box

Can anyone recommend a suitable lubricant for the Lucas windscreen wiper motor gear box. On dismantling the wiper motor I found the gearbox packed with a crusty dark brown grease. Unlike the steering box I am sure that the wiper motor gear box should be grease lubricated. I think even 1200wt oil would leak out of the casing. The MG workshop manual by Blower dismisses the wiper motor by saying that it is packed with lubricant during manufacture and requires no further attention. Not even the ball bearing oiling point at the top of the motor is mentioned. Having dismantled the wiper unit I am sure that this oil point is just for the motor shaft and does not communicate with the gear box at all. Jim Chase

Jim, I've had good performance from a light-bodied white grease called "Lubriplate", which neither seeps out, nor hardens. It's also fine for distributor cams, since it stys where you put it. Regards, Carl Fritz

Chip, All these years, I've just asked for "LubriPlate", with no number or other identifier, and always got the same stuff. However, I went out to the garage just now and looked at the carton & tube. Only numbers I found are these: "P/N L0034-087" and 1 & 3/4 oz. Hope they are what you wanted to know. While we're talking about lubricants, there's another I've found to be extremely satisfactory, especially on rubber parts such as brake cups & boots. It is silicone-based, called "Sil-Glyde Lubricating Compound" ( their spelling, not mine, BTW), and is made by the American Grease Stick Co. of Muskegon, Michigan 49443. GREAT stuff; I wouldn't be without a tube of it in my kit, and I don't own any stock in the company, in case you were wondering. Regards, Carl

Jim when I rebuild those motors I use Ams-Oil synthetic grease, it has a good cold temp flow and is thick enough to keep the gearbox quite. I suspect any good synthetic greas would be OK Joe Curto

Go to http://www.lubriplate.com/Products/ and you'll see what I meant about the many lubricants sold under the LubriPlate brand. LubriPlate 105, for example, was for years THE standard engine assembly lube and is still very widely used. -- Chip Old 1948 M.G.
