Hello Group, Recently new to this group and also a new 2003KLR owner. My new bike is leaking oil. It appears to be from around the oil filter cover. I took off the cover, inspected the O ring, wiped the area and had a look for debrie/irregularities in the housing and everthing looked fine. Re attached the cover snugly and I still have the leak. Any ideas before I am back to the shop? Am I missing something obvious? Any one had the same problem?

Kent If you loathe taking your bike back to the dealer like I do and don't mind spending a few bucks you could go buy a Fram oil filter part # CH6070, I don't like Frams personally but they do come with a new O ring for the filter cover that you could replace your existing one with. If that doesn't stop the leak, you'll probably have to take the bike back to your shop. Oh, and leave the stock filter in, if you do have to take it back I wouldn't let them know that you took the cover off , not that it should make a difference, but some dealers will use any excuse to put the blame on you. maybe the case was machined wrong.?? If it has the O-ring in good shape and there is no damage to the surface of the case, than you shouldn't have a leak. Is it coming from the screw?

I'm getting oil leaking from the weep hole at the bottom of the water pump. If the water pump seal had gone should it not be coolant coming out. Is this a common problem? http://www.msn.co.uk/specials/myemo Mark, The water pump is driven by the front balancer shaft. This shaft actually runs in both the engine oil environment, and in the coolant environment. There are two seals that keep the environments separate, and the weep hole is really a small drain that allows either oil or coolant to leak out, alerting the rider to a failed seal. In this case, the coolant seal is not leaking, but the oil seal is. Check Mark St Hilaire's site for the repair sequence. And even though the coolant seal has not failed, I'd recommend replacing it as long as you're in there. Also, clean out the oil pump screen! http://klr6500.tripod.com/wpump.htm hth, MarkB

sorry if this is a double post, i'm new to this and the last message doesn't seem to go through. theres a very small oil leak coming from the bolt connecting the top of the oil pipe to the case. anyone experience this? also, do you need to remove the tank to work on the top of the oil pipe? thanks in advance nick

KLR-ista, Has anyone had the little bolt to the crankcase, that sits just forward of the shifter leak? Oil seeps out, but only a small amount, after i turn off the bike. It doesn't leak while running, so i can run it for hours, and it only leaks when warm, and right after shutting off the motor. I think i could live with this, but i had to take off the skid plate, which became quite a sandy, greasy mess. This leaking bolt screws directly into the crankcase, and will not tighten (stripped). What yr bike? Have you or anyone else changed out the doohickey? If it was changed out, they may have re-used the gaskets and that along with the stripped bolt is allowing it to leak. I guess you could remove those two side cases and then: 1.) heli-coil the stipped out hole; 2.) install new gaskets (paper with a built up silver coating on each side) and that would better fill the gap; 3.) use a liquid gasket material to better fill the gap; 4.) do nothing (always an option for annoying problems). Definitely sounds like the idler lever bolt (doohickey adjuster bolt). If that's stripped or broken you've potentially got more problems than a leak. I'd say it's time to pull the covers and inspect. While you're at it, replace the o-ring and upgrade the doohickey if you haven't. da Vermonster
