helmet suggestions?

Can any of you all recommend a full face helmet (brand and model) that has the most road noise / wind insulation? I ride mostly highways and want something that will be as quiet as possible. Eddie P.S. I am starting to think that helmet manufacturers play a game with us, they make a helmet, sell it for a year or two, then discontinue that model and stop marketing the replacement face shield. So, you are later forced to buy a new helmet, or ride with no face shield. My current helmet is 8 years old, is in great shape, but I can not find replacement face shieds.

Arai still sells face shields for everything, but not all colors or styles. For instance, I can't get a mirrored face shield for my oldest Arai, but I can still get clear and tinted. And yeah, that's one reason I bought a new one. I like mirrored face shields. Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

My criteria for a helmet is which one is going to protect my noggin the best. Then comfort, then noise. Of course they shouldn't have to be mutually exclusive to each other, and thank goodness they aren't. Arai is considered the best. It takes 30 days to make one (by hand). Most helmets are built to the DOT drop test. So lots of builders build up the top of the helmet to survive the drop test and consequently you have a top heavy helmet. Arai helmets are the same thickness all around the helmets because they know you might take a hit from any angle. Their helmets survive multiple strikes above the limit in testing. The fit is fantastic. Aerodynamics superb. I wear ear plugs anyway so wind noise has never been an issue. You can buy extra face shields. A fairly quiet helmet with controllable airflow is an AFX 39. Dual sport with a shield that with the visor is removable, allowing use with goggles if required off-road, about $130. My color of urban cameo matches my 07 KLR. Hi-Vis colors also. Made in Taiwan and distributed from the Northwest. They also offer good street helmets . Mark, Dust Devils MC Sent from my iPhone. Landsailing at 126.2 mph can be fun!!!!!!!!

The quietest helmets that I have worn have been Shoeis. In clean air, an RF800 is marvelously quiet, as was my X8. My Arai XD is pretty quiet, too, although the visor means there will always be some turbulence. In turbulent air, any helmet is going to be noisy. Closing off the opening around the bottom with something like a scarf will quiet a lot of helmets down. PLO-style kaffiyehs can be bought in a lot of Middle Eastern gift stores, and Aerostich sells a couple of nifty silk scarves that will do the trick as well.

AFX has promised to continue to support all the helmets they have ever manufactured with spare parts. I also love my FX-39 dual sport helmet. I got mine for $99 including shipping from Revzilla. I think it was a sale price but you may keep an eye out for another sale... ________________________________ From: Mark Harris To: "DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Sunday, October 14, 2012 11:20 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Helmet Suggestions? I've only had two helmets, so I can't offer much help on the noise comparison. I also have an Arai XD and highly recommend it. With ear plugs, the wind noise doesn't bother me. The main thing that makes this helmet outstanding is the clear visor can be lifted even though there is a motocross style sun visor. This really makes a difference when riding into the sun. It is a pretty comfortable helmet, too. I have ridden for up to ten hours a day in it, in very hot weather. I have never used my other helmet since I bought the Arai. (KBC Racer 1, XL, grey, in excellent condition if you're interested. ;>)

Not good at night. WAY too dark. Gotta carry a clear spare. It even says "Not to be used at night" or something like that right on the shield. Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

I took an AFX-39DS to the Roaming Rally last year. loved it. I even rode the Berkshire Triple in it. It is tons quieterer than the HJC flip up I was using. they are $96 on Amazon right now. They fit me well, quiet, great visibility, inexpensive... http://amzn.com/B0053VH89M
