Well, I never met Buddah, I have seen an illusion or two, and have been baffled on more than one occosion by the magix of mathematics and electrickery. shrug. What I have seen (once) was the green flash while sitting on the beach in Spain and it remains a very memorable moment. (after watching for years and years--finally, "Is that it?" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_flash Fortunately, i was later introduced to KLR's and the size of the particle (Higs Boson)is no longer (as) immportant...I would rather know, "Is there someone handy to help me pick up the big blue pig?" such as last Wednesday when I was the youngster (age 57y 350d) and had a 67 and a 71 y/o DR650 d/s guys help me pickk up the sleeping pig in a boulder field. I might have seen the green flash again as we picked up the pig, but I am not certain...at 6000ft elevation there were a lot of spots in my eyes as we heaved ho and some of those spots might have been green. Did I mention, I was graded a '9' for the dismount? revmaaatin.

LOL. Right. The Rev will heal up, but the bike could take time and money to fix. ;-{>

Is the bike OK? Just peachy. Very heavily armored and the foward speed was slow. I, on the other hand was just a little 'stretched' on the get off. smile. revmaaatin. who was once told by a Montana female postal clerk, "If you are not falling down, you are not riding fast enough." I say, "Falling down is over-rated...."

what's up with my speedo drive?

Post by Tony » Mon Sep 24, 2012 2:13 pm

As I get older (also late 50s), I have less and less interest in picking up heavier bikes. Over the last several years my primary ride has gone from a Concours 1000, to a ZX12R, to a VFR800 alternated with a Husky TE610E. Towards the end of the ZX12R's tenure, I spent a lot of time on a Ninja 250 as well I just got back from overseas and took the VFR for a ride (which only weighs 120 lb or so more than the KLR). What a big, fat heavy pig of a bike in comparison to the 125 Hondas, Yamahas and sundry chinabikes I rode in my absence. Even compared to the Husky it is a fat, heavy lump of lard, yet at one time this was the lightest handling bike I owned, and I used to be amazed at how responsive it felt. :) I've been on and of borrowed / tester KLRS in that time, as that was my go-to bike for a Central America trip I was planning but never pulled off. I have thus running discussion on what is the perfect bike for SE Asia (Philippines to be precise) with some friends. Most of them seem to head towards the KLR or similar, but I'm coming to the conclusion that if Yamaha made a 250 dual sport version of my YBR125G with a few upgrades, that would be enough for me. Give it 6 to 8" of travel, maybe a monoshock rear and 21/18" wheels, better disks up front and out back, and I'd be about set, as long as they keep the strong subframe, very easy maintenance, reliability and big, comfortable saddle. I've muscled the 125 through rocky ravines, dabbed in slick clay / mud, and rolled it up and down the gangplanks on pumpboats and 'fast' ferries, where even the 125 only has about 6" free width to play with. I'd hate to have to manage a KLR in any of those situations, and for the less-visited islands, the pumpboats and small ferries are often the only choice. Even for some of the more popular islands you are much more restricted in travel times if you wait for the roro ferry (roll-on, roll off). On my island that limits us to 1 ferry out at 6AM in the morning, and back at 6PM at night, whereas I have 6 times as many options if I can use the standard ferry, running from 5:30 going out to 7:30 back in the evening. Reversing direction on a trail or in tight quarters means spinning it around on the side stand or just picking up the rear end and walking it around. Here in the USA it would be underpowered for a lot of riding, but then most non-freeway roads around here are limited to 50 mph (at most) which the small bike can do fine. ================================================
