I'm waiting to "here", what Jeff S. And fred H., have to say about, modifieing a STOCK Carb.? I know many that install a New Carb, but how much benefit, from..... Modifieing a stock carb, Compared to a new Aftermarket carb? I KNOW! John B. realy likes his aftermarket carb, not sure if he did/tryed the .22 cent first?

<><><><><><> <><><><><><> Mark, Since you've dragged me into this... : ) The carb on my KLR is stock down to the idle mixture adjustment. (I guess the factory got it right on mine.) The 22 cent mod is to change the mixture which on many KLRs is lean in the mid range and rich on the main jet. Some folks find the KLX needle to be much better than the stock needle. Drilling the slide is to improve throttle response. The size hole to drill is 7/64". On my bike I did the 22 mod, drilled the slide and performed the de-californication, then did the tweetyectomy. My brother had the exact same bike, right down to the year and color. His constant comment was: "Damn, your KLR is so much more responsive than mine!" As far as raw horsepower increase, there won't be much. I'm of the (popular) opinion that if you want more horsepower, the quickest way is to go buy a different bike. However, the mods listed above will make it "snappier" and more responsive, but you still won't be going 120MPH. It's just not the bike for that. -Jeff Khoury

I have lurked here for a while and now have question regarding jetting. I recently purchased a 2006 KLR with 37xx miles. Bone stock except for lowering links (5.5 inches center to center). I live a 8000 feet and will likely not go below 5000 feet. Most of my travels will be between 5000 to 12000 feet. What are the jetting recommendations for my KLR? Both jet size and mods? Thanks. <><><><><><> <><><><><><> Jim, If it was my bike in that situation I'd probably just put a No Toil or Uni filter on it and ride as is. KLRs are known to be jetted a bit lean from the factory. So going higher in elevation helps richen the mixture a bit. Are you having starting, running or driveability issues? Making sure the valves are adjusted to the max spec (intake 0.008", exhaust 0.010") will probably make a big difference in performance too. The carb on the KLR is a constant velocity (CV) type carb and is pretty much self adjusting for elevation changes. I've run mine at sea level to over 12,000 feet without adjustment. Of course at higher elevations you find a little less performance which is to be expected with any engine.
