Folks I just picked up a new chain from a local shop and I wanted to make sure that I got the right chain. It is an RK 520xSO (120). I assume that the 120 is the number of links and I looked on the back of the box and it says that the chain is only for upto 400cc bikes. Is the right chain? Zack, it is longer than you need...and I would suggest what many consider the chain of choice for the KLR (a bit more expensive) DID Gold Premium X-ring Chain 520VM 106 links... Kurt

Way too long, unless you have some unusual size sprockets. "Up to 400cc" sounds about right. The 520 size chain is fairly common on road-going 250cc bikes, ones that make about the same power as the KLR. Mister_T

I am looking for a Chian replacement for my KLR. According to DID the replacement would be the 520-VM, but my dealer only has a 520-V. Does anyone know if a 520-V is a suitable chain or if I'll have problems soon if I install this one? thanks Jose A-12

Hello, Has anyone used a chain on a KLR650 that has a "CC" rating less than 650? I noted that the DID VM was rated for 700CC, but it cost about $110 dollars. Thanks, Joe in IL

I have used a $17 non-oring chain and got 14,000 before I changed it. It required quite a few adjustments until full stretched. A bit noisier. But $17 I could live with that. By the way street only I ride no dirt or trails. TC

I have with no problems. The KLR650 puts out less power than most 500CC fours, so don't sweat it. Being the tightest wad I know, I try never to pay more than $40 for an o-ring chain. Yesterday, I received off ebay my RK Ultra-Ring chain, which says "up to 600cc". Mark

Dealer Gino P advises getting a Bikemaster o-ring. Says they're more affordable and just as good. Bogdan

I RESPECTFULLY disagree. The Bikemaster is an ok chain but it isn't the chain that the DiD VM series is. Average Tensile strength on the Bikemaster 520 O-ring is 7400 pounds. Average Tensile strength on the DiD 520VM X-ring is 8120 pounds. Besides being stronger, average tensile strength effects how long the chain will last. The X-ring seal on the DiD is a much better and more efficient seal than any O-ring. I have two lengths of chain in my shop for demo purposes and you can feel a big difference in the amount of effort to bend the O-ring chain over the X-ring. Less effort = more HP to the rear wheel. The DiD VM description in my catalog says: "Special oil seals produce 50% less friction and 50 - 100% longer wear life than standard O-ring chain." The X-ring has two sealing surfaces that should keep dirt out of your chain better and keep the grease in your chain better than O-rings. The DiDVM has a gold colored plating on it's side plates that should help if you have a corrosion problem. So like I said before the Bikemaster O-ring is an OK chain but you get what you pay for.
