motor oil prices have gone nuts

$5.29 a qt for Valvoline or Castrol GTX that be for regular Dino Juice Now you have to buy 5 qt jugs with an oil filter in order to make the price reasonable at Autozone. But, mail in rebate hassle. I did manage to get Castrol GTX at Pep Boys on Black Friday for $3 a quart but again had to mail in rebates. I have gotten all my friends and GF oil filters because I have enough oil filters for my Jeep. IT NOW COSTS MORE TO BUY OIL WITHOUT AN AUTOMOTIVE OIL FILTER THAN IT DOES WITH AN AUTOMOTIVE OIL FILTER. ONE SAVES 40% BUY BUYING THE OIL WITH AN OIL FILTER! GO FIGURE... J#3

Jeffrey, I'm curious. Why not stock up on gallon jugs of Delvac 20/40 when it is on sale? I think I calculated and oil change to be $2.50. Why use expensive oil like Castrol GTX? GTX is for high performance engines? Why not use Delvac which is tough enough for high diesel engine temps similar to the KLR tractor engine heat. I think I still have some $5 per Gallon Delvac. Jim

I did stock up on Castrol GTX and Valvoline Premium for about $2.50 a quart. I got 10 quarts at $2.50--depends how you count the oil filter; maybe $2 a quart and 10 quarts at $3; maybe $2.50 If you have to buy oil filters that you won't need for a year or two and they are a package deal--how does one account for them. HOWEVER, I WON'T BUY MOBIL 1 ANYMORE; EVEN ON SALE. THAT WHAT WAS IN MY KLR when it blew. J#3

How to account for buying Extra on sale. The banks are giving less then 1% on money market accounts, Regular savings even less. As long as you own nothing, (Paying NO interest to anyone) and you can save more then $1. on a $100. sale, for 1 year, (1$ earned on $100=1%) you are coming out ahead.

We call that cost avoidance, which is good. If we can take that same 100 dollars and invest in something which will create a positive gain, which is greater than that saved by purchasing based on a predicted increase in cost of goods and services. If those goods and services costs increase beyond what we could have invested in, then we have still simply avoided additional cost. Now, if we purchase that oil, with the prediction of the cost increasing, let's say 15% over the next year and we can sell it for that increase, that is a nice net gain. It's all in the timing. We know the cost of petroleum is very likely to go up, particularly when Iran lobs one on Israel. So, collectively, the KLRistas can pool our money, purchase huge quantities of oil for ourselves, as a cost avoidance and massive amounts of 20/50 which we can sell to the Harley riders at market value. Just to re-ignite a flaming oil thread. cough. Valvoline 10-40 shears to 30wt in less than 1000 miles when used in a KLR 650 engine, as per oil analysis; Butler Cat Oil Analysis, Bismarck, ND. Tested in at least two KLR's, maybe 3 in 2004/2005. Real science, not just smoke up your skirt. cough. Its your skirt, oil it the way you want it. revmaaatin. yeah, its cold and NO riding; and we had the first closure (4-hours) of I-90 today at the Sturgis exit due to blizzard conditions.

The first number refers to the cold pumping viscosity, the lower the better. A 0w-40 and a 15w-40 have the same viscosity at operating temperature. It will make no difference, in fact... they're better for your engine because they pump better at startup, which is where most wear happens.
