<><><><><> <><><><><> Chris, I use a slosh battery from Walmart with great results. Cost is less than $40 and they last me 3-5 years. They also give me an indication they are getting ready for replacement compared to some AGM batteries that are fine and then dead 15 minutes later. I have read good things about this battery, but I don't have any direct experience (I'm planning on buying this one when I replace mine). Deka ETX15L Powersports AGM Battery, $73 including shipping on eBay: http://goo.gl/pujOF ________________________________ From: skypilot110 To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, November 28, 2011 7:41 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] What are the current best battery options Started slow twoe last week. OK, so far I have the following responses regarding batteries. Please send me any other options you know of, and preferably have experience with, and I will compile my list to send out David Nichols says he has heard good stuff about the Deka ETX15L AGM. Ebay - $73 including the shipping. He has no personal experience so if someone can confirm that please email me direct. http://goo.gl/pujOF Jeff Saline says he has good results with the Slosh battery from Walmart. He liked the 3-5 year life and the slow fail vs the AGM finger snap and its dead business. At less than $40 that sounds like a good option since it is on my way home from work. That said I dont know what "Slosh is and searching walmart.com only shows Everstart powersport batteries, which say they are AGM. We will see what the shelf at Wally World sys on the way home. http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=motorcycle+battery&ic=16_0&Find=Find&search_constraint=91083 ************************************************************ This communication, including attachments, is for the exclusive use of addressee and may contain proprietary, confidential and/or privileged information. Means you have to add distilled water every now and then. That bothers some folks and the slosh part bothers some too. If you lay the bike down and don't pick it up right away some acid could leak out. I don't have that trouble as when I lay my bike down I pick it back up right away. One other possibility for failure with the slosh battery is if it's a bit older it will get sediment in the bottom. That's a natural part of the battery chemical/electrical process. But if the battery is turned over the sediment could move around enough to contact the bottom of the plates and cause an internal short in the battery. That will quickly lead to battery failure. For me this isn't an issue as if that were to happen it would mean the battery was near the end of it's life anyway. I think Everstart was the name on the battery I got last time I had to buy one. I just checked and I don't have the box it came in. It was not an AGM battery. When you get the slosh type battery you'll need to fill it with acid. Wear eye protection and fill it just to over the plates. You'll have some acid left over. Let the battery sit for 30-60 minutes so the plates can absorb the acid. Then top it off with acid again. Just go to the full lines and not over. I'll often rock the battery a little side to side to help knock bubbles off the plates and sides of the battery. I'll again let it sit for 30-60 minutes and then rock it some more (2 or 3 times) and check the level again. I'll top it off if needed. Then I put it on a battery charger for 14 hours. I'm using a 1 amp charger. After the charge I'll let it sit for a few hours and then measure the voltage to make sure it's at 12.65 volts or higher. Again I top off the battery if needed. That's the last time I put acid in it. From then on the only thing put in the battery is distilled water. Some shops will take the extra acid. I've given it to Batteries Plus. If you are going to dispose of it yourself mix it with baking soda. There will be a bunch of foaming. Keep adding baking soda and stirring until the foaming stops. For storage I measure the voltage and if it's not at least 12.4 volts I put it on a charger. Then during extended not use periods I'll measure voltage and charge it anytime it gets to 12.4 volts or lower. Sometimes that's a few months. I do not charge a battery unless it is discharged. Your better than me. When I lay my bike down I usually lay there moaning for a while then worry about the bike. There is usually a tree involved :-) Slosh makes sense now! AGM or glass mat batteries are the best way to go. You save taking off your 20 times to check the water in a slosh battery. AGMs work well and the prices are reasonable...you should be able to find one for under $80 There are better batteries if you want to pay over $120 but price/performance/convenience-wise AGM is the only way to go. I bought a Magna Power ETX15L AGM battery in July, 2010, from Advance Auto Parts. So far, so good. Made in USA. Today only, there's 20% off (enter code CYBER in cart). Order online, pick up at store. Mike Martin,Louisville, KY [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I've been running this battery for the last 2 years with no problems, It seems to crank the KLR a bit faster then the original after the bike has been sitting for a couple weeks and takes a couple tries to start......Have a grat day....Greg ________________________________ From: David Nichols To: skypilot110 ; "DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Monday, November 28, 2011 9:56:37 AM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] What are the current best battery options I have read good things about this battery, but I don't have any direct experience (I'm planning on buying this one when I replace mine). Shoraipower.com for lithium-iron battery that weighs less than 2 lbs for a KLR650 battery model. 5 times longer life, more cranking amps, not affected by cold temps like any lead or agm battery. Downside, pricey and needs Shorai charger that stores or charges. I have one on my FZ1 Yamaha and will get one for my 07 KLR when my sealed lead acid dies.
